When the list of things you have to do to GET one is longer then the product description, there is a real problem. This site also brought up a particular point about machine guns in the '20s and "assault" weapons today - up close and personal like most crime is nowadays, criminals prefer pistols or knives, not a bulky machine gun/"assault" rifle. Also, pistols are considerably cheaper and easier to conceal. I also never understood why the Army chose the M1A1 model over the 1928. The 1928 had a 100-round drum magazine while the M1 had only 30 rounds. The M1 only weighed a 1/2 pound less. Granted, stick magazines may have been easier to carry, but it would take 3.3 to equal just one drum.

BTW, this all started because I'm interested in owning an actual 1928, even if it is a replica thats not even full automatic. Damn gun control freaks.

So alla confusing stuff has to happen between the dealer and retailer, and you gotta pay 200 bucks for the service.

At least that's what I could discern with my shiat reading comp.

That's alotta money, fer sure. But look at it this way... If you got to keep the money, you'd prolly blow it anyway on a stupid gun.

Hmmmm.....I've got the Thompson 1927A-1. Bought it around 1980. Heavy trigger pull. Little kick. Have drum and clip, drums are very heavy.

I don't often shop for guns. usually I just keep my eyes open for deals that are too good to pass up.

but the next gun I shop for will be a 1928 thompson. I have no practicle use for one other than that I just feel the need to have one. sorry to hear (but not suprised) that there are so many hoops to jump through to get one (on top of what I'm sure is a nice steep price-tag)

I've always thought the m1a1 could take either mag. I've never owned one so I could be wrong.

OK, I'm a "gun guy" but I don't see the problem here.

It was the National Firearms Act of 1934 that originated the tax on transfers of certain automatic weapons.

I don't see this as an infringment on my Second Amendment rights. Anybody that isn't in serious trouble with the law can get a Thompson. If somebody IS in trouble with the law, I don't think I want them to have a Thompson.

Where am I wrong here? This has been the standard since 1934, after all.

The problem here seems to be the barrel lenght. Mine http://www.auto-ordnance.com/ao_t1.html and the one in question http://www.auto-ordnance.com/ao_t1sb_f.html If I remember right sometime in the late 70's? There was a min barrel length added to the gun laws. I remember the usi that came out at that time had a nutty long barrel. AdmRose....if you look at my Thompson at http://www.auto-ordnance.com/ao_t1.html you see there is no warning about class 2 class 3 dealers. As far as I can tell, barrel length is the only difference.

I heard or read the drum magazine was easy to break by overwinding it even a little bit. The spring would spring without much effort.

Other than that, it's a cool looking weapon, that's for sure. Be kinda neat to have a replica to hang in the "war room." Was always more partial to the fore stock version, rather than the hand grip...(which looks gangsterish imo.)

First time I saw a full sized version (in a gun shop) I was surprized at the size, around 3 feet long!!! That was one of the long barrel Thompsons.

If I absolutely needed a full auto sub gun for self defense purposes, I would choose a Mac-10. No larger than a brick and weighs about the same. That way I could carry it around with me.
