Field Ack
« on: May 17, 2004, 12:27:50 AM »
Please do something about the field ack  so that it can be seen farther out that 300 to 400 yards.  Right now, those light colored shots coming up off those light colored "Helicopter" pads is really difficult to see.

And before anyone says "you'll get used to it", if I can see some of those other little object lying around the base (like fuel), then certainly I should be able to see an uncamoflaged AA piece.

It is the object size slider that needs to be moved over to the left to show up smaller objests at greater range.

OK, so I set everything to max and then my frame rate drops to squat.  WTG.  I set only only the first to sliders to max detail (forget what they are called) and my frame rate is fine....until I get down into a base and start firing, get around a lot of cons, near some smoke, etc.  Then my frame rates go to as low as 19.

I can deal with the ground detail being set to .5 miles....the terrain is pretty, but doesn't really effect me at a tactical level.

But it seems like the only way I can keep my frame rate above 30 is to have one of the first two sliders set to more performance and the other set to more detail.   Of course, I could set them both to about half,  but all that really gives me is half-assed detail.

If I have the first slider set to more detail and the second set to more performance, my frame rate stays around 65 to 75 (sweet), but if I muck with it at all and bring the second slider detail level up, well, see above for the results.  Why in the world should I have such a dramatic drop in fram rate?  Anyone have some settings they can suggest that are a little more optimal?

Yes, I have DX 9b

Intel P4 3.0 GHz
1 GB DDR 400 RAM
nVidia FX 5900 Ultra video card with 256 MB DDR RAM.

Ok
Sys specs:
P4 3.06 GHz
512 Mb Ram
Nvidia GeForce Fx5200 on nvidia 56.72 drivers 2x Aniti Aliasing - Anisotropic Filtering off.
Running AH2 at 1200x1024 (marginal but 1024x768 is smooth)
Slider settings give ack detail at distance

Your card kicks mine's arse.

I think there must be something up with your puter.  I get way better than that with a p4 2.8 and a gf3ti200, 512 megs ram.

How crusty is your computer?  Do you have children installing every little im software they can find?  How fragmented is your harddrive?    I run mine with everything at its highest (sliders all the way left) and never drop below 25 or so.  Sitting on the tarmac I get near 70.

Not crusty at all, ergRTC.  I just built this box last fall (I think it was November).  No, my children to not use it at all.  For that matter, my wife does even use it (she uses the other one I built).  Now, I have been known it try a new peice of software here an there, but the hard drive has more that 100 GB of free space left open.

I am using a RAID stripe 0 configuration on two SATA 150 80GB drives.

I know this sounds like a typical retort, but "no other graphic intensive game displays this serious of drop in Frame Rates" including IL2:FB, Lock-On:Modern Air Combat and Unreal Tournament 2004 (all set at high detail levels).

Also, to clarify, the drop is not when I am just sitting on the tarmac.  When sitting on the tarmac I get between 60 to 75 (typically)  However, it drops tremendously in when I get flying and am zooming across the field at a couple hundred feet off the deck...especially when i start shooting.

Like I said, I know most people say it is not their machine, but I really don't think it is my machine.  Unless someone can point me in the direction to prove that it is my comp, then I really think the issue lies elsewhere.

Thanks, anyway :)

But thats why I think it is your machine.  The machine should be running at a great fps, yet it is not.  If it were the game, I would be getting crap for fps too.  When i buzz a field I drop down into the mid to high 20s.  Is this before or after everything has cached?

Just completed some testing.  It is the number of triangles that does it.  If my Level of detail and Displayed Object size is set to the highest detail level, my frames start to drop severely if I get over 10,000 triangles.  So far, offline, I haven't dropped below 31 if I leave ground detail range down to .5 miles.
