PC power issue ect....

Go home from a long weekend.....went to turn on pc - nothing...nada.

Figured it was a power supply issue...

New power suppy - 480watts plenty to run it...was on 400watt

Got the new PS in - fired it up - power supply / hard drives/ cpu fan all came on for about 1.5 seconds - then off...

I removed all cards / drives, ect and left one 512 stick of ram in and fired up mobo/processor only....1.5 seconds - shut down again....


Any clues -

been looking at doing an upgrade to the amd 64 - just wasn't hoping that it might have to be this soon.

AMD XP2700
Gigabyte GA7vaxp
1.5 GB ram
Soundblaster Audigy platnium EX
ATI Radeon 9600/9700

Same thing happened to me recently.  The new 480 PSU didn't help.  The new motherboard did.  Tried the old 430 PSU and it did still work.

Waffle, you'll want to be sure your heatsink is properly attached to your CPU.  Your system would do exactly as you describe if it was not.

Yeah - I was thinking temp or grounding issue also...

What does a toasted chip look like? little brown/black around processor core? course that could be old cooling paste...

I'm wondering what brought down the power supply in the first place, and then why it would act this way once power suplly was replaced.

Power surge?

a powersurge can and will take out a power supply with the pc turned off .  (i was witness to this happening last month when a tree fell on our wires at work )

and since you still boot up for a sec.... it sounds like a mainboardor cpu shut down problem.

as for colour on the cpu well thats hard to say .Ive got two "Popped " amd cpu's and one is a sort of green colour and the other is sort of purple/green.

Bloom, also made a good point.  If your heatsink is not making good contact and the right amount of paste, the overheat protection  (COP) will shut it down and show exactly your symptoms,

This was exactly my problem when I changed my HSF a week or so ago.  Felt like a total noob for overlookin that since I just changed the HSF and came asking for help =)
