Poll : would you be able to land a plane in RL ?
« on: November 18, 2000, 11:45:00 PM »
Well, Flying Sims myself (but wearing glasses 1inch thick, or nearly...). I often wondered if I could land a Real plane (Kinda like in the movie "Airplane", but I'd start with a Cesna).

What do you think ?

If you can land plane in here you could probably land one in real life (might be ugly tho)

i only have experience in gliders tho... no powered airplanes for me

the only plane i have had experience landing in reality was a piper pa-140, in some aspects it was almost easier. the planes in a.h. are tail-draggers for the most part and in r.l. there is a greater field of vision and the other senses help - it's not just visual. it will never be less nerve-wracking though because if you miff a landing in a.h. ,so what, that will always be the biggest difference - more preparation and attention to consequence - that and a.t.c.

edit - ps , my vision is also very poor - it will keep you out of the military but shouldn't stop you from getting a private ticket unless it isn't correctable -

I've landed a cessna 152 - was easier than i expected, you have *so* much better perception of speed, hieght, descent rate, your position relative to the RWay etc etc.

i have a 2/3 size p-51 mustang kit that I put together and I fly it often although I never fly from an airport..  The wings come off and i put it on a trailer and just take off from this little road out in the country...any who, landing in real life is a bit easyer yet also more complex... its like there are more thing to do but you also have more snese of feel and drop and drag than looking at screen.  id say yes a truely good sim pilot with a good sense of feeling could do it. I think the only REAL obsticle to overcome is the g-forces, I.E. that sense of drop and pressure can freak ya out if your not used to it.

I fly gliders, don't always land on the field though :-)

If someone tried a glider without experience especially on the airbrakes, he's likely to overshoot the field bigtime IMO.

I took a training flight last year in a Cessna (by no means does that make me an expert).

Flying the plane, turning, etc. was pretty simple.

Taxiing on the runway was harder than flying.  Getting used to the brakes and turning was the hardest part (but at least I stayed on the taxiway   ).

Taking off and landing (I did not do those things) would probably be the hardest part.  In a low-wind situation, I think I could probably do it (like someone said, it wouldn't be pretty), but with higher winds or a crosswind, I'm not so sure.

Yes, I can land a plane.

It's easy - get to altitude, jump outta plane, pull ripcord and watch plane do a beautiful one time landing.

Wobble I would like to see a picture of that! Sounds cool, 2/3 size of a real P51 you say? 2/3 of Cal. 50 Machine guns must be something like Caliber 32 - A bit weak but should be enuf to shoot down a Cessna now and then

I think it would really depend on the airplane.

Planes like a 172 land practically by themselves.  Tricycle gear decent view during decent.  Some other Planes like the very short KR-2, are pitch sensitive, and can be a real dance on the pedals (taildragger) on the runway.  Especially with any bit of a crosswind.  Other taildraggers like the Jodel D11 my 9 year old daughter could fly, so again it would depend on the ride.

Also planes like the KR-2 have pretty weak gear mounts.  The way I see some folks smak the runway in a sim makes me shudder.  I know the KR2 would have the struts through the wing with a possible gear collapse.

Have a pilots license.
Have flown differant planes.
Have flown and landed many airline sims, to include the 747/200 and 400. Alot of factors go into a landing, maintaing proper airspeed being one of the top keys to a good landing.
Its not all that hard, but doing it well, like anything takes training and practice.

I think anyone who can land a Hog in AH well could probably land a Cessna in RL, so long as the following conditions were met:

1)  There is no wind or turbulence, or just a steady headwind.
2)  He has been told the proper speeds to fly the approach, and has practiced slow flight prior to attempting landing.

A long, wide runway would help too.
