Purchasing a new car..
« on: May 20, 2004, 10:57:17 PM »
Hey folks, I was in the market to buy an Infiniti G35 Coupe.

I just wanted to ask if anyone of you could help me find some pricing information on this car. Some of my resources on this car is a bit limited, because it is a new carline. I've read good reviews from http://www.consumerreport.org plus some other sites, so I'm not to worried about getting a crappy car, as much as getting burned at the deal (assuming most folks concerns). If there is any thing you could offer it would be much appreciated.

Opinions are always appreciated about this car, as well as tips on trying to get the dealer to reduce the price of the car.

Thanks in advance,
-BM

I believe there are some G35 / Z forums out there.  Usually some really knowledgable people on those forums.

If you want my two bits, wait a couple of years while someone else takes the butt kicking as that thing drops in value like a rock.  Then pick one up used for half the price.

Resale on an Infinite is about the worst out there. You're better off buying a Nissan (all an Infinite is)

The G35 Coupe is a pretty nice car for what it is...I actually like it better than the 350Z.  Just my opinion, but I think the published hp is conservative and that it is really pushing out about the same hp as the 350Z.

The website I use to get a good idea for what to pay on a new car is http://www.edmunds.com/

They give a TMV (true market value) which shows what reasonable dealers are accepting for a car.  When I've helped others negociate for a new car, their TMV has been spot on.

The also have links to info about dealer hold-back and other money makers for the dealer.

I'm not knocking the 350Z/G35(aka Skyline) but  B. M. they've been haveing tons of gearbox issues, break squeeling, and abnormal tire ware, and feathering.

The G35 is a great car.

Should run you around $35K reasonably optioned out for a 6spd coupe.

No glaring problems that Im aware of - a few owners have had some transmission problems, IIRC.

Yeah let someone else  take the hit, just about to purchase a used  Aston Martin DB7, it's now lost all of the tax that was paid by the owner from new and also the largest part of its depreciation.

It'd be ideal to wait a year, but its not going to happen. I've always felt more comfortable purchasing new cars, than a used car.

Thanks for the info.

Infinity G35 Coupe info at Edmunds.com

Look at the TVM pricing report. Also see the Edmunds Tips and Advice info. It's a popular car, so be realistic.

(Everyone with a noodle thinks they are an expert at getting that special deal on a car, yet dealers continue to roll in dough. Hmm.)

Edmunds, Kelly blue book, Consumer reports... good places to start but don't look at them as a bible. Too many people come to me when trading in a car and think I'm trying to screw them because my offer is so low compared to what some internet site told them what their car is worth.

$30 to 34k for a used G35, any higher buy new. Also you don't need to buy from an Infinity dealer, all Infinitys 1995 and newer come with a 4 year 60,000 mile bumber to bumper and 6 year 70,000 mile powertrain warrenty that is fully transferable.

Go to Edmunds or Kelly blue book and pay no more than $2,000 to $3,000 below what they say the retail price of a vehicle is.

Email me if you need more help.

A new car is almost as bad of an investment as putting your life savings into fireworks.  Sure, it looks and smells pretty, but you're left with an empty bag when it's all over.

Last year, I bought a 1999 Yukon, 4X4, all the options for $17K.  It was in perfect shape, low miles, and I expect a long life out of it.  New, it sold for close to $45K.

A 2 or 3 year old car, properly cared for, is essentially indistinguishable from a new car.  The only difference is that all the things that came broken from the factory have been fixed.
