Really Strange Case

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/05/20/spain.bombings.lawyer.ap/index.html

The guy was held for 2 weeks, and it turns out they did not have his finger prints. How do you arrest someone on the claim that you have his fingerprints in spain then say well i guess we did not?

Another FBI F-up.  Keep in mind that he was never charged with a crime.  He was being held as a "Material Witness".
===========

Within two days of his arrest, the balance seemed to be tipping in Mayfield's favor after Spanish officials began to voice strong doubts that the fingerprint found on the bag was really his.

Spanish investigators told the Madrid newspaper El Pais that they had found only eight points of similarity between the print and Mayfield's - instead of the 15 required for an exact match.

In addition, Mayfield's family challenged authorities to check his passport - saying the attorney had not been out of the country in at least 10 years.

your house was broken into while you were out of town --

your wife and child were killed --

the authorities have a general idea of the assailant --

they find a print(s) in the house which match over 50% to someone who fits the profile --

what would you want done?

I would want them to catch who did it.  Which as I have read the Spanish authorities have done.

I am interested how the FBI connected (rightly or wrongly) this American lawyer to the Spain bombings.  Is he connected to some organization (other than his religion)?  Is there a money trail?  If he hasn't left the country in a decade, and none of the suspected bombers have ever stepped foot in the US, what is the link?  Surely there is more than what the public knows.

My post was more of a comment about the whole "Material Witness" crap the federal government is using to hold people without charge.
