Stevie never played scales...He played "from" only 2..Minor/Major pentatonic scales and liked that flatted fifth.

Sounds like you need to learn your modes..Ionian,Dorian..etc(including assholian) [/B]

its all scales.  especially the modes.

The most moving, beautiful and difficult scale is the chromatic scale :D

Seriously MT, it really depends on the music you like. My best advice is you can and will learn to play guitar if you just try to play your favorite bands tunes. Worked for me wanting to play RUSH. But that’s not the whole story.

If you love folk guitar artists, you bet. You can learn and play those tunes in a very short time. They just wrote good songs, and the guitar was more a tool to accent their lyrics, and any of the common chords you will need to learn anyway will serve ya well playing them.

But if your into Heavy Metal, or Yngwie Malmsteen, don't even try. I knew a Bruce Springsteen fan and guitarist for a popular Atlanta band that could play very well, smoke live, but on a million dollar bet could never play anything remotely fast or heavy, and he had talent. Not something to try to mimic.

On the other hand, if you like AC/DC, I'd bet you could have a blast playing them to CD's in not alot of time.

Another example: If you like the Eagles, you will play a shell of their tunes that sounds kinda like them with hoopty common chords. You can learn the chords, and when you actually figure out how much way insane stuff is going on, you'll learn even more. And possibly go on from there and get better, learning more about playing geetar.

Don’t take me for advice, just ask Wlfgng about guitar, he seems to be the real deal.

It's all practice. If you are willing to set down for 1-2 hours a day, every day, and get past the "I can't stand to hear myself play stage" you got it made

AS for SRV... well he is still the one who.... never mind, get him on dvd and watch and see if Anyone could touch him for raw emotion on the stage.
 ya ready for this ?
Fav pickers..
John Denver

It depends on what you want to play. Lead is not going to come very fast. Rhythm and bass can be learned at a bit faster clip. The amount of time it takes you to pick up the hand manipulations will make or break you. Ninety percent of all hard rock songs are based on two simple BAR chords. Learning simple non-BAR basic chords like A, C, E, F and so on will teach you how to get your fingers to work together so it becomes automatic to change chords. It will be frustrating until you get the hang of it. One other thing you will need to develop is what I call an “Ear” for music. By this I mean, being able to listen to a song by say Judist Priest on a CD and know just what chords A, C, E, F are being played by the sound your hearing. In my heyday I could knock out the rhythm for just about any rock song in a few minutes. If there’s a key word for the hold deal it’s practice, practice, practice. Just like flying AH.

Best Advice: Get A good teacher.
I pay $50 an hour for mine and It's worth every penny.
It saved me years of trying to find out how to do this stuff on my own.

But then again some of the greats Like SRV never had a teacher and in fact could never even read music.

I guess I'm an Odd ball but playing lead comes easy to me It's the rythym stuff I am having trouble with.
Oh And those freekin Bar cords LOL I have big hands but short fingers  so they are a challenge for me.

I know this will sound odd coming from me but if you have it in your heart at some point it will come thru your fingers man .

That's where the "ear" thing comes in. I never found any sheet music that matched what these guys were playing. The more time you work with the songs on a CD the faster it will develop. After a while you'll listen to something on tha radio and say, A, C, E,G so on.

Everyone is different. I never had lessons, self taught and play okay.

Get someone to show you bar chords and you can be playing songs in one day. Get a chord book and learn some open chords and you are on your way. Bar chords will make you think guitar is easy, and it kind of is :)

I taught 2 of my brothers a  couple songs, from never playing at all, (Back in Black and Lonely is the Night) in about a couple hours and some practice and one is left handed and playing my right handed guitar. Granted, they didn't sound like pros, but they got the songs basically down.

Lead is a different thing though, but in my opinion should be a secondary goal if you want to play songs on your own.

Live at el mocambo

awesome video.

on learning the guitar... it totally depends on
1) practice time
2) inate ability (no substitute IMO)
3) decent quality instrument
4) MOST important!!!  drive

start with something you really like and have in your head...
The whole idea is to enjoy it..
I really dislike the 'classic' methods of 'do it this way'
go with what feels good.  No one creates or is innovative by doing what everyone else does.

It doesn't HAVE to be complicated...
bottom line:  if it sounds good, do it.

oh and most Metal players are not that great IMO.
speed isn't what it's all about.  That's technical and anyone can get fast.. but placement of notes.. feeling, using silence as a note.
that's different and far beyond what most metal-heads use
