Chilling results after downgrading to DirectX 6.1
« on: October 09, 2000, 01:49:00 AM »
No more crashes to desktop for my Geforce 2 card.  Amazing, uninstalled DirectX 7.0a and tried the "old" version 6.1 and now everything is working absolutley wonderful. I can even run with fastwrites enabled on my VIA chipset motherboard.  I suggest you Geforce owners try DirectX 6.1, especially if you don't play anything else that requires DirectX 7.  Again, someone tell me why DirectX 7 is better?

I wasn't aware it is possible to downgrade DirectX from 7.0 backward.  Are you sure this has happened?

Yes. You need the directX un-installer.  I always had it so I don't know where you can get it currently. Just search for it.

I don't have GeForce, but I think that new direct-x versions are must.
There is soon coming direct-x 8 as final (at least beta is already, and I am using it with V770 TNT2)
So games will also require DX7 at least...
I've never had problems with newer DX7, just with the first final version of it.

Try out DX8 beta, Fscott..
Might be better than 7 and surely better than 6.1, if that 'might' works.

At least DX8 has had no problems so far..
(actually I got 10 points more 3d marks  )

DX8b for win9x:  http://www.neutech.fi/~rahi/axs/ax.cgi?../files/DX80eng.exe

DX8b for W2K:  http://www.neutech.fi/~rahi/axs/ax.cgi?../files/DX80NTENG.exe

Not sure if they give files outside of Finland.

I have learned that the DirectX 8 beta has an expiration time limit within a few days after installation.  I ahve also learned that some people are having some great difficulty getting thing erased from their system without having to reinstall Windows just to get back to Directx 6 or 7.  Be careful.

Wohoo... after 3 hours of installing fun my system is running again!!!

Bah, DX8 totally screwed it up - dxuninstall only caused protection errors - reeinstalling DX7 helped nothing...  joystick control disappeared totally... great fun - just installing W98 over again did not help at all --- soooo, format c: FUN !!! well, all up and running now

"never fix a running system" grrrr
