You have cicadas in WI?  I've lived in michigan all my life and never seen one.  Same with cockroaches - they're just something that us poor lake people hear about.

Yeap, cicadas all over the place.

Cockroaches = teh suck as well.  They're around, but only in ****ty food serving establishments like the local Denny's.  They add flavor - but i'm only there at 3am ordering a big ****in lumberjack while extremely inebriated.

A few years ago I was walking back from my brother in laws house just minding my own business.  As I was approaching a tree I saw something drop out of it and on to the ground about 10 feet ahead of me.  I walked a few feet further and realised it was a hornet that had attacked a cicada and was in the process of stinging it rendering it paralyzed.  It took about 60 seconds from the point of hitting the concrete to when the cicada stopped struggling, I could see the hornet's legs wrapped around the cicada and trying to hold it still.  The cicada was huge, 3 and a half inches long.  The hornet was about 4 inches.  When the cicada quit moving the hornet slowly lifted off and flew away at a greatly refduced speed.  My thought of the whole experience was, Damn, that was EVIL.  One moment an annoying loud and hated cicada, the next a hornet victim.

Ok, so they weren't as big as I thought.  But this is what I saw.  And it wasn't a hornet either.

Out West here in the desert we have what we call "Tarantula Wasps". Basically they attack Tarantulas, sting them then lay their eggs inside of them. The young hatch and eat the spider alive... from the inside.

These are big black nasty looking wasps with orange wings. They are hella scary.

Bah... they're harmless. The yellow-jackets up in the San Joaquin valley are far more aggressive and they attack in groups. :)
