Get A Load Of This!!!! (HiTech)
« on: May 28, 2004, 01:20:15 AM »
I just reformated my laptop here. Its a nice laptop for what it is. Dell Inspiron 8100. Here are the specs. I never tried messing around with AH2 on it before because I figured it just didnt have the guts to be able to run it and run it so it was playable.  But I was curious as to what would happen if I tried. So I installed DX9, went and found the latest video drivers and installed them. All seemed well and good but I still had little faith in the little system.

I downloaded a freash install of AH2. Opened it up and waited... Hit off line and to my surpise the thing was running smooth as silk. Almost too smooth for me to beleive. I had to jump in a plane and start bombinb a field to make smoke to see how much it would affect the performace. It slowed it down but it only dropped to around 38FRPS. PLAYABLE. On line factors have not been seen yet. I have yet to log in and see how it does in a furball.

(A Quick Run Down)
P3 1.2 Processor
NVidia Geforce2 Go Mobil 16MG YES THAT IS RIGHT 16MB
512RAM
Latest Nvidia Drivers found at dells web site
DX9

All sliders for performance are set at half way.

Max Texture Size is set to 128

800x600 res (Its runs just as great with higher res settings tho)

Take a look at avail vid memory. FRPS ect. Its nearly unbelievable. Too good to be true, but it is.

The reason I took the time to post this, is BECAUSE this.

I've been seeing alot of people get swawed away from Ah2 thinkin their systems can't run it. That they just dont want to bother with trying to run it because their computers just don't have what it takes. Well the facts are right in front of you guys and gals. I still have a hard time beleiving it and have to keep going back in to the game to play with this and that just to see what my limitations are. There are NONE what so ever.

I can do anything on this little lap top with a 15 inch LCD screen that I can with my desktop thats 10 times the system. (Im sure it has its limitations but the game is playable and I have not found any big set backs as of yet.)

Please guys dont give up or not try at all. You really dont know what your missing. Its lots of fun and seeing all the new things Ah2 has to offer, it really is like a whole new game.

If you have any other questions about settings or sys specs ask, I dont know if all that I listed is adequate to show you all that I have.

Here are some screen shots I took while on line... During which time I was being told by some that it was simply imposible to run AH2 on a 16MB video card.

First pic seems to be a little unclear. I think thats because I reduced the size of the picture.

It's not impossible, it just use the AGP bus a lot and give a peformance hit compared to a card that maintain all textures in it's local memory.

Your notebook's vid card has hardware T&L, that's why you are lucky to play it. :)

This was a high end notebook, when it was delivered.

straffo, you are incorect. By him setting his max tex size to 128 he lowere his vid memory requirements greatly.

I'm confused  do you mean there is less trafic on AGP bus when text mem is set to 128 ?

(I should learn to shut up when not speaking of metrology and cmm :D)

I would bet, that AH2 is not using the ability to load texture into system RAM via AGB. Very few games are doing this, cause system RAM is much slower than vid card RAM.
So, the reason why he is able to play it with 16MB vid RAM is simply because the texture size by setting max texture size to 128x128 is small enough to fit into his 16MB available. :)

Remember, texture size increases exponentially. ;)

Morph,
What happens when you fly close to the ground, as in attacking GV's?  Are you able to see them outside icon range?  That's got to be one of the toughest tests.  LTARs are good enough shots that they don't need the advantage of invisibility.

Aparently you haven't payed attention in AH2 or just didnt bother looking at the screen shots. All that stuff at the top of the screen there. You see it? Thats all from AH2 bud. AH1 Doesnt show half that information.
