I go to Washington DC at least 1x per year and have been watching the progress on this for a while. Can't wait to see it.

WWII vets gather for memorial dedication

If you haven't been to the Mall in DC the WWII memorial is at the other end of the reflecting pond in front of the Lincoln Memorial. A beautiful spot and very prominant.

The Veterans Affairs Department estimates World War II vets are dying at a rate of 1,056 a day. The dedication of a memorial decades after its war is not lost on them.

I got to visit the completed memorial last Monday. I left a blubbering pansy. People left mementos and medals and pictures near the State markers and in front of the Star Field. It was amazing.

Will have to take a look next time I'm in DC.

My favorite is the Korean War Memorial. Every time I visit it, I see something different that I missed previously.

Overall view..

The Star Field.. I think each star represents 100 lives lost.

Just a sample of the mementos people leave...

It looks very beautiful and very moving from the pictures I have seen.

IIRC wasnt there a huge movement in opposition to this memorial tribute? Why on earth?

Location, primarily. All of the war memorials seem to be off to the side of the national mall.

Sandman is right. They placed this memorial at the opposite end of the reflecting pond from the Lincoln memorial. The Mall used to be wide open with the Capitol on one end and the Lincoln memorial on the other. The Washington monument was the only structure in the middle. People were concerned that the WWII memorial would break up the esthetics of the Mall. It actually fits in quite well.

One thing that really seems weird. The war on terror will probably help people forget about the loss of the "open Mall". The huge expanse of grass that used to stretch from the Capitol to the Lincoln memorial is going to be a thing of the past anyway. They are now constructing a moat or something around the Washington monument. It used to stand majestically at the top of a grassy hill. I guess they expect a truck bomb or something so now the base will be surrounded and it will be accessible via a bridge.

With all due respect, all was "well" on September 10th, 2001...

So your words are incorrect. However, do remember, it's easy enough to fill a ditch when the time comes...

The classic liberal stance and response.  when they were in power they did all they could to undermine our security.  When the proper and prudent steps are taken to reasonably secure anything the whinefest commences.

Liberals!
