Classical music suggestions?

Doesnt have to be anything snobby.  Looking for music you could put to footage for 'emotional effect.'  Think Tom Clancy 'war' movie type stuff.

Any recommendations?

Obvious answer is Holst:  The Planets, Mars; Bringer of War
Tchikovsky's 1812 was written about war, i.e. Napoleon's Russia retreat, and features cannon fire.

Of course if you want really good music, anything by Hank.

Thinking that sometimes music going against type is effective.

There was a series in Discovery Wings about the Luftwaffe I think narrated by Peter Ustinov.   While he described the aircraft, the attack strategy, and the carnage softly in the background played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

All of the above recommendations are great.  You might add -
• Dukas: Sorcerer's apprentice
 • Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain
 • Stravinsky: Rites of Spring
 • Ravel: Bolero
 • Smetana: Moldau
 • Shostakovich: Symphonies 4-9
 • Runeberg/Pacius: Our Land (Vart land) - heh, the Soviets banned the playing of this piece. :)  There are many versions.
 • Smetana: Ma Vlast
 • Most music composed betweeen Beethoven and Stravinsky is a candidate ...
 •
"Pictures at an exhibition" also by Mussorgsky. Cool story behind it.

If you want something more modern;

Carmina Burana - Carl Orff

Anything by John Williams

Perhaps, but the soundtrack for Red October has some good stuff.
