UBB alternative

Heya Ronni,

Have yall considered replacing UBB with another bulletin board? A very popular alternative right now is vBulletin. It's completely database driven (MySQL and PHP) and has all the features of UBB plus a few more. There is also an import utility that makes moving from UBB easy.

Just a thought.

vBulletin is nice and I was about to purchase it for my squads web-site but the bulletin board I use for No.9 Squadron is Open Source (Free) based on MySQL and PHP like vBulletin but also has stuff like instant messaging built into the board as well as integrated support for many of the online messaging/chat programs such as ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and America Online Messenger, it displays when a person is online on ICQ it also has a members list visitirs can look at as well as the facilty for everyone to see when a board user is currently browsing the bulletin board.

One advantage over vBulletin is it uses the same codes as Infopops UBB so users won't get confused between using different codes. Take a look at my bulletin board as well as Mindmaker's forum (which just goes to show even Sotware Comapnies take it seriously) and for more info visit the creator's web-site There are many add-ons there to convert databases from UBB and vBulletin and its constantly being updated. For the sheer wealth of features I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a web-site for their squad.

I might also add it supports 'themes' which means you can set the board up with different colour schemes and images so that users can choose their own personal style to view the board..imagine it here each user could select a colour scheme to suit their particular choice of aircraft such as an RAF theme or Luftwaffe theme etc etc.

...or anything that provides an NNTP interface, so you can follow the discussions with your favorite News Reader (Forte, Outlook, etc)?  I'm having a really hard time with UBB pages loading/displaying.

I use WIN Server, which allows not only an HTML interface to read/post messages, but an NNTP one as well.  Check it out at www.santronics.com  or www.winserver.com

NTTP would be the best, by far. I'd imagine that 90% of the UBB users have either Netscape or Outlook Express installed, it should be extremely easy.

Just don't bring those bums from the office Ronni.  Yankee can come, but the rest we'd rather do without.

Fancy bloaty unreliable popularistic no good crap technology.

Back to the good old days of usenet, I say, where 100 posts a day can be dropped by yer server.

At least back then a man had his excuses.

Let me just say, that I fully support NNTP services, and I think it's downright silly to try to emulate that functionality with a web-based setup.  The other real benefit to going to NNTP would be lower bandwidth.  Running an NNTP server has to be much lower in terms of bandwidth requirements compared to this big picture-laden HTML driven BBS thing.

With straight text messages, it might cut down on some of the bandwidth usage from the BBS.  NNTP has got to be a whole lot less bandwidth than all this graphical web stuff.

Saving more bandwidth for playing the game would be a good thing.
