Maybe it's just me, but "nuts" was rather lame...

I can think of several responses right off the top of my head that would not have required the slang to be interpreted for the Germans, something they would easily recognize as a colorful and emphatic no.

What McAuliffe should have done is grabbed the first rifleman he saw and aked him to supply the reply. Where's a sailor when you need one?

I liked the surrender response from "a bridge too far"

when the Germans asked if they like to talk over terms for surrender the reply was-

"I'm terribly sorry, we really don't have the manpower or resources to take you all in right now."

Its my understanding his reply was 'cleaned up' by the censors. So what he said is lost to us.
