Warbirds, Fighter Ace, etc.?
« on: June 01, 2004, 12:55:27 AM »
Being new to Aces High (and on-line flight sims) I was wondering how Aces High compared to other flight sims like Warbirds and Fighter Ace.  I gather from reading these boards that Air Warrior closed down - what about the other two?  I saw them listed in the back of a magazine about the P-51 Mustang.  For some reson when I tried the URL's listed in the articles, I was unable to connect with them.

Yes, Electronic Arts (EA) killed Air Warrior a couple of years ago. I am an Air Warrior (once an Air Warrior, always an Air Warrior) I moved to Aces High when Air Warrior closed.

You found the right combat flight sim. Welcome to the virtual skies. You'll find that HTC has great customer support, and some pretty good customers as well. It is a pretty good flight sim as it is, and the new version will be even better.

As for Fighter Ace I have never played it so can't comment but as for the other 1 ...foreget it.  Hardly anyone there + it costs more than AH.

i.e 60 to 70 peeps at the week end compaired to AH 250 to 550 peeps.

It turned into something I didn't sign up for.  Takes about 2 min just to get airborn because it's so complicated.  The planes and GV's are almost the same.  They have a noval thing about calling in an artillary barage but you as the spotter attract shed loads of badies.  So you can't hange around to triangulate the following salvo's.  You can't pilot or man the cv guns like in AH.

You'll spend more money for less is my bottom line

FA is even more of a game than AH, that makes AH better in my book. MUCH better.

Came from FA to AH, Fa has got better eye candy but gameplay is poor - too much ai, wonder woman cockpit view - ie invisible cockpit, 2000 ft gunnery for everything and "relaxed" physics killed it for me.

The have an arcade feature (the crayon room) which the under 12's really enjoy - try it for two weeks - they used to have a free trial period - cost is the same as AH.

Very little acm, mostly gunnery and SA....but then again gunnery and sa is all you need against most people.

FA/FA2 convert here

tried warbirds when it was $2 an hour then stumbled into FA

found AH when it was in its beta, couldn't hit anything so I went back to FA

came back to AH around tour 3 and have been hooked since

AH is the best online sim. if your computer can handle it, pick up a copy of IL2/FB. It is the best boxed air combat sim and will make you a better AH player.

AH is the best bang for the buck, something for everyone here. 500 in the main, you'll find somethin fun to do.

WB is for lack of better words is just there. Fun doesn't seem to be in the formula. Personal taste on my end, but flying for a half hour looking at "scenery" to fight a few other guys in a huge arena leaves me wanting something better.  They really seem locked into a "game set" that promotes empty unfortunatlly.

Rumour has it that EA borrowed one thing from AW for re-use and that was it ;)

Aces High is the best flight sim, mostly because of its technical excellence and consistency. Next to Aces High, Warbirds is rather sloppy and buggy, although there have been some fine improvements to the game.

You can get an all you can eat subscription to Warbirds for 13.95 now, so numbers are improving... you can see 90 to 150 players now even on week nights. And they have autotakeoff now so new players don't have to spend a lot of time learning how to take off, and even an auto land feature. Warbirds is trying very hard to catch up to Aces High, but they won't make it, in my opinion. Still, it can be a lot of fun. The Main Arena in WarBirds is not an arcade arena (all planes available at all times to all 3 countries) but a WW2 arena with rolling planesets. It's fun, but Aces High has its own WW2 style arena, known as the Combat Theatre.

Air Warrior, alas, is no more.

I would recommend that you stay with Aces High. Add Mitsu's sounds to the game, and enjoy. God, with those sounds, sometimes I just sit manning an ack at an airfield just to listen to the planes taking off and arriving. No kidding. They add mucho pleasure to the game.

Happy hunting, and good luck! :aok

Thanks for the replys.  I've enjoyed AH very much and plan to stay with it.

I've seen several references to "MItsu's Soundtracks."  What s this, what does it do differently, and where do I get it?
Thanks again,
Debuman

What Schadenfreude said.

But I do wish AH would allow some of that FA eye candy like fun gorgeous external views and dust from props and wheels.  Can't fight well with external views, but they certainly add another enjoyment dimension.
