Unpowered human flight (video)
« on: June 04, 2004, 03:24:04 PM »
Since this is an aviation related forum I thought I'd share a wee bit of video with ya.

It's made by Bo, a Birdman instructor, and demonstrates quite well the capabilities of modern wingsuits. Shots from all over the world, including my own home DZ. I ain't in the video though - need to save up the $1000 a suit costs.

My sister is in it (she's for sale btw, and is a medical doc, so she'll earn ya back the money quickly) though, so prospective buyers can get a look at her. Freefalling makes everyone look "pretty". Video is of her first Birdman jump and she can be seen about 6min 25 secs into the video.

What's striking is the shape of the wingsuit - even for an untrained eye the similarities with a normal wing are apparent. Some of the shots, where the skydivers (or "pilots", as they like to be called :D) aren't flying relative to each other show well the maneuverability of these things. The aerial combat scene through the clouds is quite entertaining.

Video is 24 megs and can be found at

Right click and save as...

Pretty exciting what they can do with wingsuits nowadays eh? There's serious thought and energy being put into the idea of landing one without using a canopy.

Getting one of these suits for XMAS. No need to worry about chute-shooters if you're wearing one :D :)

Comments are welcome.

Awesome video, thanks!

I may go someday to try parachuting in Ampuriabrava. We got the busiest airport for that kind of activity in Europe and I have yet to take advantage from it :)

Did somebody say Birdman Video?

Quote
After years of seeking justice on the streets in tights, Birdman traded in his super powers to take part in one of the most evil of professions, a lawyer. Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law is the world's first animated courtroom drama. With help from his falcon sidekick, Avenger acting as secretary, Harvey Birdman sticks his hands deep into the briefs of the legal world.

Birdman has tackled many tough cases, such as the Race Bannon and Dr. Quest custody struggle, the Shaggy and Scooby possession charges and a mafia case tied to the Flintstone family. With such elite clientele, it isn't hard for this man to find something to defend. While Birdman struggles for justice, his enemies come to the aid of the guilty....as lawyers! With judges like Mightor, who can barely comprehend speech, and Mentok, who takes minds but isn't ashamed of it, it's a wonder any case gets solved.

My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Landing wingsuits without a canopy? Who are you trying to kid?? Didn't you see that Road Runner episode where the Coyote had one of those wingsuits- PLUS rockets strapped to his feet- and he still crashed and burned?

It is obvious drugs are legal in your country.

Do those things actually produce LIFT or is more of a controled fall?  Just curious.

Can you do more serious manuvers like barrol rolls loops  maybe even a zesty hammerhead?

Pretty cool vid though...watched the whole thing in full screen.

I gotta admit, the eye candy is great but the FM in the Coyote-Roadrunner cartoons was better- once the Coyote folded his wings he dropped like a rock.

I'll do you a deal Santa: I'll give you Funked and SOB for the sister -  that's a 2 for 1 deal (or 5 to 1 in terms of mass)!

Granted they both have some hard miles on the clock but they are experienced, eager to please and they both have real pretty mouths. SOB can also do some wild things with a fish and pair of trousers.

On second thoughts you will have to agree to take MiniD as well: he'll pine away without SOB and start posting pictures of lonesome turtle doves all over the checksix forums.
