So .. as the uninformed dummy that I am, I think that the guys responsible for the maintenance must not be doing everything right.
Or, quite possibly, the aircraft could have crabbed too much on landing, or hit hard enough to have side loaded the down locks enough to cause failure. It was a fairly common occurence when there were lots of them flying.

You are one of those guys, and you got offended because you never overlook anything. It's about the same for me to read this constant BBS France bashing and being French. It's the life in the O'club.
I do get offended when you claim a blanket statement as you did about the CAF, (I am not a member, but I do ALOT with them). As for me never overlooking anything, thats a luxury I do not have, because if I do overlook something, someone more than likely will die. THats why my shop, and my guys institute triple and quadruple checks on EVERYTHING we do. It's expensive, but 12 years and no incidents speaks for itself. Ever wonder why mechanics are so cranky about how pilots do maintenance write ups? As a pilot and mechanic, I understand the need for TOTAL knowledge of the problem, not just an assumption that the mechanic will find it...
Ohh, and for your record, I do not hate France, nor do I bash France. I will own a home someday in the south of France near Ex someday in the future, as I think it is truly beautiful, and I love the people there. That said. I think Chirac's leadership is not to my liking, but guess what, I am not French, so I do not have a right to change that leadership.
