One thing that I think would vastly improve realism in the game is to get rid of enemy icons! It seems oddly a bit like training wheels and ruined night flights. Which by the way I actually enjoyed. WE never figured out what day the stars were set to, now we will never know :(   Get rid of Icons, Bring Back Night Time, and give me a P61 Black Widow and I will show you how to Jabo!
Skuzzy, Hitech, Pyro... I am going to hold my breath and refuse to eat until I get  P61 Black Widow!

Realism in every facet of a game isn't always a good thing.  For a particular game element, it's only good if the enjoyment it delivers is worth the cost.

In any case, if you get rid of icons, how will you ID enemies, since they could be flying the same plane as yourself??

Yeah, because all fighter pilots in WWII were legally blind.

No they weren't legally blind, they were able to recognise the enemy fighter types without having a little red text buffer hovering around them.

Your idea would put HTC out of buisnes.

We are stuck with moniters do not come close to being to let us see as well as our eyes would.

Without ID aids you would be simulating pilots that are legally blind.

someone once told me that the only real accurate FOV is when you're fully zoomed in.. so we'd need monitors the size of 55" widescreens.

try fighting in the DA sans icons. it's incredibly tough even just 2v2

So would you suggest that HT make Bish all US planes, Knight all LW, and Rook all Japanese planes so that we could tell who the enemy is. I think this would cause the same problem we have with the scenarios  that most people would prefer to fly US.

Also without the icons and I assume the radar since that too is a "training wheels" item, then we would fly for hours looking for the enemy. Though this would be more RL, I know it would not be fun to me.

And that's why I'm here.... to have FUN.

My .02 worth.

Warbirds III planes are bigger, and it didnt work so well there.  I guess you can set icons the way you want and test it out, but you won't  like it.

Actually the answer is quite simple. And you prolly alreeady know it. Remove ONLY the NME Icons.. freindlys remain on.  Also the Zoom feature is quite simple to use. I use it all the time. I Zoom on distant Dots to determine their direction of travel and orientation.

That's real convienient if the dot happens to reside in the small chunk of the screen that will get zoomed.  Otherwise you'll spend many seconds trying to find it.

And when you do, you still won't be able to see it as clearly as in reality by any means.

The Zoom is variable.  I use the Bracket Keys  [   and   ]  to set default zoom to my liking. Not the Game default. Its set at about 50% of the Game default zoom. Several of use have played  in H2H sessions with ICONS off for the Real Feel many times. Its really not that difficult after you get used to it. Its all relative. If all were subjected to the same settings, then all would adapt. Try it sometimes. It's actually a lot of fun. :)

I have the variable controls setup on my HOTAS.

My qualm is that looking at a plane in full zoom usually requires wagling the aircraft all over untill you get the dot in the zoomed area.  I haven't seen much footage of WWII pilots moving their planes around so that they could get a look at that aircraft just forward of the spot directly level and to the right.

In reality we have vastly better control over what we look at.  Claiming that the zoom feature makes up for the resolution issues (it doesn't) ignores the problems it introduces.

I would like to see an improved icon system and I do think it is possible.  However, I have absolutely no desire to play "dot chaser online".  Been there, done that.  It s****d.
