Any ideas on what I should do in the interim? 19 years old with decent amount of money and a lot of time on my hands.

1. Get your financial and other affairs in order. You won't have a chance to tend to them for a while. Have mom or dad (NOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND) tend to your accounts while you're gone. Have a special power of attorney drafted so they can sign for you, if necessary. If you do have a special someone in your life, don't rush off and marry her before you go. Trust me, it usually doesn't turn out the way you think it will. (Disregard the above if you're already hitched.)

2. Stretch every morning for about 20 minutes, starting with your neck and finishing with your calves/ankle area. Don't worry about trying to get a head start on what you think the physical program will be since 12 days isn't enough time to accomplish much. Just stretch.

3. Enjoy your favorite foods, music, movies, magazines, books, etc. Spend quality time with the people you love, but whatever you do, don't go into the "if anything should happen to me" speech.

That about sums it up. By the way, who did you join, and what will you be doing?

edit: Oh yeah, one more thing: No matter what happens, no matter what anyone says or does to you, no matter where you find yourself or what you find yourself doing...you volunteered!

:D   Good luck!

Jump out of bed and run 10 miles every morning...that might be a good start. (I'm not kidding!) You may want to buy a motorcycle, depending on the branch of service (Coast Guard and Navy allow you to take them on some cruises). Won't do you any good during boot, but will come in very handy later.

REMF! :D Just kiddin ya.

An MOS that provides possibilities for almost any duty assignment + career skills thrown into the deal...smart move! When I joined up, Gulf War 1 was still fresh and all I could think of was getting into some kind of "action" job...so I ended up in a tank for 7 years. Thank God for the BEAR pogram...been a REMF myself for the past 2 years and love it (Reclassed to air traffic control). Ironic that I feel like I get more "action" on a busy shift than I ever got in a day in the old job.

Enjoy yourself!

sleep in and stay out late. Spend as much time as you can with your friends (and family if you're into that).

Oh Gaawwwwwd.... Ft. Jackson in the summer. Okay - spend the next two weeks in a sauna to acclimate your body. But global warming may have made it more humid and hotter since I was there for basic in 1271 A.D.

Shave your head, then you will have a few moments free time when everyone else is getting there hair cuts.

Don't get any ink done when you get out of basic and get drunk for the first time after basic, wait on tats untill your sober.

Dont take anything with you you don't want displayed, you wont see it anyway untill your done.

Run 1.5 miles every morning for at least two weeks before 5:30

Remember every min. of it it will be some of your greatist memorys and you would redue it if you can (really, trust me on this)

Carry on, and good luck

God speed, hero!!

That is all the Army has to run? Waaaaaaaay back when I went to USCG boot we ran 5 miles, did 15 min PT, ran 5 more miles then marched to mess call.
You didn't have much of an appetite the first week.

when I went in it was a bad idea to shave your head ahead of time, no pun intended.

Guys who had, got picked on relentlessly by the instructors.

We had one guy who shaved his head before hand. The still ran the shears over his head, and made fun of him. There wasn't much benefit in that in Navy Bootcamp (which was a joke in 92).

Personally, I say **** it. I wouldn't run going into it. You're going to get all you want and more when you get there, life is going to suck a **** no matter what. Might as well enjoy the time you have. Unless you're really out of shape to begin with, in which case 11 days isn't going to save your fat bellybutton either way :)
