I certified NASDS in 77 (11 yrs old), mostly dove Puget Sound and the Oregon coast, but have made a couple dives in HI in the last few years.

I lost my dive card a few years back & I guess NASDS is out of bussiness so now I have a SSI cert.  it doesn't really make any difference to me who the card is through, but for some reason it really burns my bellybutton to look down at that SSI card and see "Diving since 2002" on the front.

I would strongly recommend that the landlocked dudes take a vacation to Cancun and drift dive Palancar's reef.  You'll be glad you did.

Well there goes my theory that you have to be semi smart to pass a diving test.

:aok

Dove Cozumel once. Did the dive you're talking about. Amazing how your air consumption drops when you get your buoyancy set and let the current carry you. Probably the best dive trip I've had. It was my first "real" dive trip. I was so excited that I sucked the first tank down in record time. :lol

Diving the CA coast is horrible in comparison. The Kelp beds can be fun, though.

The hole at Belize is on my wishlist of places to dive, but I don't see it happening in the forseeable future.

Oh, btw...YMCA Open Water c card. Yeh, I'm an old fart.

We skin dive Palancar's I hardly ever scuba anymore too much junk and it slows me down.  We free dive for fish though now at 47 yrs of age I try not to spear in water deeper than 60 feet.

An aquaintance of mine was lost and his remains never recovered in the "hole"  I guess two years gone by now.  Dr. Ruben Delgado. his 13yr old son was his dive buddy.  Apparently he suffered nitrogen narcosys.  He was reported to be taking photos of nothing at near 200 ft.  He was an experienced diver with many hours logged.  Be careful in the hole and also "the wall" in Cayman both are deceptively dangerous dives.  The sea is very unforgiving always hire a guide or take one of the party boats whenever you go to a new place, it's safer and you'll have more fun.

Certified while in Okinawa in '75. Tried some fresh water diving after but too boring. Back to Okinawa '85 - '90, loved the diving there. However, the coral isn't what it was due to so much construction around the island.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.
