so after 7+ years as a loyal customer,  I'm finally giving up on Symantec.
with todays problemsand the problems I had last year (where live-update said it was updating my definitions but weekly but when I looked over the info it hadn't been updated in 8 weeks, even though an update was reported weekly) I've had enough.

I finally got last years fixed (well to be accurate I used a 'work around') until the subscription ran out.  then bought NAV 2004 in December.

well, for 6 months it worked OK, then last night I plug in my new external DVD burner, then I get the message that my free trial is over and I need to activate my software.

so I re-enter and send the activation code and it tells me it's not a valid code, so after about 50 minutes on hold for customer service they say they can re-activate my code so it will work, try again in 1/2 hour.

it doesn't work, so another hour or so on hold they send me an e-mail with a patch.

I install the patch, and now it won't work for different reasons, it only flashes up for about 1/2 sec, but something about proxy settings.

so I call back and they tell me that they think I'll be able to reactivate in another 1/2 hour or so, try again then.  we'll see

but in the long run, they tell me that I can expect to go through this process every time I either turn off or unplug my external drive.  since their anti-piracy software sees the added or removed drive as me using their software on different computers.  apparently my system + an external drive = a completely different system.

when you protective software gets to the point that it protects your product from normal use by the customer it my be time to re-think it.

in the mean time I have to wait from a call from a customer service manager about getting a refund.  I paid for this POS for a year, it should either work for that whole year or I should get my $ back.

so now that I've vented, back to topic.  anybody know a good reliable, frequently updated anti-virus that isn't going to require a new subscription every time I unplug a USB cable?

Personally I use McAfee (love it).

Lotta my customers rave about TrendMicro's stuff as well.

Symantec AV (IMHO) has always been a resource hogging PoS.
