Beta42 video/CTD

The blue-sky screen seems to be gone (haven't seen one, anyway).  What I get now is extremely jerky frame rates; smooth one second, step-step-step the next, then smooth.

I also still have problems with lockups.  They last about 45 seconds, then I get a "host connection lost" and returned to desktop.  Three times I restarted AH, three times I got as far as the hanger.  A couple times I managed to get in the air and do some stuttering.

Had the same problem when I altered default settings in the game for my VID card.
Changed it back and problem gone.

Drat.  Reset all my vid defaults.  Got about three minutes up, just rolling in on a P38, when it did the lock-up, wait 60 seconds, then HCL/CTD.

Blech.

Intel P4 2.6
Soyo Ultra Dragon 400
1.5G RAM
nVidia GeForce Ti 4600
SB Live!
CH Pro USB set
Win XP Pro

Odd stuff:
3Ware 4 channel IDE raid (OS and AH do NOT run off the RAID).
3Com Etherlink XL

I don't use onboard sound, network, or raid.  Kinda takes RA and N out of DRAGON.  I don't use the O, either.  I guess it's a DG.

I'm about to put a packet sniffer on the leg with the game box to see what's going on.  Everything seemed to be peachy-keen until Beta 41.  Since then I've replaced DirectX, SB drivers, I went retro on graphics drivers (back to the new ones now).  I've also turned off XP firewalling (just have the Symantec appliance in-line now).  One odd thing is the WAN light on my 678 pegs on from the moment I log in until I return to desktop.  Even when I'm staring at the "Host connection lost" dialog it's hard on.  Packet sniffer should tell me what's being sent and to where

AH1 seems to run like a peach..

Since ygsmilo also uses a Soyo board I got a whild hair and decided to load the latest AGP drivers off Soyo's site.

I also (not at the same time, thanks) nuked the cache directory and vido config 7 and 8 files.  I'm now running 1280x1024 with everything else default (including 512 textures).

I'll get several really big freezes in the game now before I get the one that kicks me out.  After every freeze my video memory usage jumps several meg; I have a 128M board and it runs over 100 when I first log in.  By the end of the second freeze usage is over 120M.

This, of course, leaves me to wonder if there's a memory leak in the texture cache somewhere.  1024 used up my card in beta40, but it ran.  512 only used up about 40-50M of video.  I'm at 512 now and it's over 100, then two to three really big freezes into the game I'm maxed out.

Maybe try bumping the textures back to 256  and see what happens ?

In 41 and 42 my card is running at max texture used also. But it hasn't caused a problem. That's a big jump from what it used to, it used to use about half of the 128 megs.

I did find playing around that it didn't make a difference on my machine when I dropped the texture size to 512 or even lower. Made no difference if I played with the sliders either.

Beta 42 is using pretty much all of my vidio card memory but causes no problems what so ever.

Lowest frame rates are around 37 in a six plane furball and only had two or three studders when I first went up when stuff was loading.

Smooth as glass in over two hours of flying in high traffic areas.

Have same problem. Screen freezes for about a minute then I get "host connection lost".

All sliders are at default, texture size at 512.

Oh, THAT was fun!

I nuked cache and video8.cfg (apparently video7.cfg is legacy; it wasn't rebuilt) and ran 1024x768 with 128 textures.  This time there was only one big skip before I locked up.

The lock up, however...

I rolled left to go get a P38 chasing a GoodGuy(tm) 2.0 below me, and got the freeze just as I pointed the nose down.  Total graphic freeze...BUT I could HEAR my speed increasing.  The timing suggests I got the HCL/CTD at the point where my plane hit the ground.  Natually I can't confirm that, but seat of the pants experience would indicate it's pretty close, given the stick inputs I fed it.

Video mem came  in at about 56M  and only got to 62M before everything graphical stopped.

The thot plickens.

It's happening in AH1 also, it just takes longer.  Actually, it seems to happen as I approach enemy fields.

In any event, I'm smelling XP/network issues more than AH changes.  My new XP install puts in a bunch of network default changes designed to protect the unwashed masses from themselves.  I'm trying to hunt them all down now.

I got a full hop in on AHII!!

WOO!!!

I mangled the crap out of my network settings.  Disabled WINS and LMHosts, turned authentication and ICF off, and told it not to register DNS.  All at once.

If I'm feeling froggy I'll start turning things on and see which one is the culprit, but for now it seems I'm back to playing AHII.  I DOUBT it's the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) since I had it off once before and it made no difference.  If I had to make a GUESS I'd say it was disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP.  NetBIOS is a screamer network, anyway.

In any event it's looking good for the home team.
