custom skins - a suggestion.
« on: June 06, 2001, 07:31:00 AM »
Balls to custom skins.  Too much trouble, like HT says, it takes longer to check each skin than it would for HTC to create them...........ok, now read that again, especially what HT said.

HT, how bout this:

You guys create 3-4 different skins for each plane/vehicle (or let players do it for ya, I'm sure somebody would).  In the hanger, add a skin choice button and allow pilots to pick which of the 4 skins they want to use.  Shouldn't effect netcode much since only 1 more variable has to be sent.....which skin # being used.

This could also be a golden opportunity to add seasons to the global environment.  Winter camo.....desert paint scheme.....whatever.   This would seriously add to the immersion factor and allow players to make more tactical decisions.......a skin that matches the current season for low vis or a skin that totally clashes for hi-vis "come and get me" kinda pilots.  (um.....only really effects GVs cos of icons but you get the idea).

The important thing here is allowing pilots to pick their own skin without having to approve multiple skins from loadsa different pilots.

whadda ya think?

I agree 100% on the immersion factor of different skins. I don't have the vaguest idea regarding the technical issues of this but I would love to see a choice of skins!

The whole immersion thing is a tough nut to crack... As I sit in my dining room, the kids in the background, my wife watching TV, the fridge 6 feet away stocked with cold beer, IMMERSION is a toughy!

That said, every little bit helps. Be it skins, terrain, changing seasons, whatever.

Damned Augie

Not to play devils advocate but you are now asking more of each persons machine requirements.  Each of those machines will now have to store 4 times as many texture maps for all those new skins than our machines have to store now.

Um.....Dingy, you kidding?

We're only talking HDD space here.

Dunno how much space you've got but I'm up to 60 Gb.  I think I can just about squeeze in a few extra skins that take up.....um.....dunno, havnt looked.....but as AH is only 17Mb I doubt very much it's a gigabyte each.   ;)

Great idea! I think 3 skins for each aircraft would be plenty... Hell, even 2 would be great. It would not be a burden on anybody's system.

I'd be willing to donate artwork for it too.   :)  Just get me a template...

I disagree. Custom skins = cheat skins.

Heck, what a way to open the game to let guys put a BRIGHT PINK skin on my runstang!

What I would like to see is a 'skin' selector - pre-packaged paint jobs available from the Hangar.  If I want an invasion or a camo job on my ride, then it would be cool to make that choice.

Firstly, what the hell is a cheat skin? "Oh no Feldwibble, the oppertunists have painted leaves on their planes!"; is that what you mean?

Secondly, What's wrong with a pink Spitfire? Have you all forgotten the Red Baron, _and why his plane was painted_ so soon?

The historical accuracy is that some planes were painted brightly, with bright personal customisations, by some pilots.

Now go and eat some Old Crow.
