MP-40 was the normal German Medium Machine Gun.  MP-40 is to German as Thompson is to American :p

Machine Pistol of 1940 would be the correct label.

Medium machine gun? No, it was a sub-machine gun. A medium machine gun would be a Vickers or Maxim. A light machine gun would be an MG 34 or MG 42. Obviously, the Browning M2 HB is classified as a heavy machine gun.
