P-47D: "Damon's Demon"
« on: June 13, 2004, 08:45:45 AM »

 Coming along nicely.

 ..

There's lots of doubts and questions about this particular aircraft, as almost nothing is known about the plane. None of George Rarey's journals seem to mention any specific type.

Anybody know which P-47s the 362nd FG, 379th FS were flying during the months between March and June of 1944? The noseart "Damon's Demon", was apparently applied to this aircraft after March, when his son, the late Damon Rarey was born. George Rarey was killed 3 months later, June 26th, 20 days after D-Day.

The only references I could gather was that of the noseart, and the fact that his jug during that timeline, was still a razorback type - about the only thing I have that makes this paint scheme feasible to the plane, as late Cs and early Ds were very simular throughout the variants.

 Ahhhhh I'm stumped.

George Rarey was flying, P47D-21-RE 42-25518,  on the day he was killed.

This would make it a Razorback Jug.

It would have obviously carried full invasion stripes from June 6th on, if you are so inclined :)

Thx Guppy!!!

How different is the D-11 to the D-21, besides the paddle blade(which I assume was installed ?)

Not much different other then some wing strengthening for carrying ordanance and a change in the ignition system for the engine and some heating for the gun bays.

This from Warren Bodie's book on the Jug btw.

Interestingly the camo was being deleted during this time so some went overseas without camo.

The Paddle bladed prop was introduced with the D-22 Jug so this one didn't have it, nor did the D-11

Curious as to where you found the A code letter to go with the B8 of the 379th FS?  On Rarey's site there is a cover done for a book that shows it as B8-S.  I don't know if that's correct either.
