737 is a great airplane without doubt but I can think of some "issues". Loiter time and icing problems when on the deck for two off the top of my head.

It's about time and the B737 may be the ideal platform.  Even though the Orion was near perfection for it's application.  The  Orion was a militarized Lockeed Electra airliner and the Brits are using the DeHavilland Comet as the Nimrod in the same role very effectively.

The Nimrod shares little in common with the Comet. It's more than just a miliarized version - it was practically redesigned inside out.

Because they proved prone to capture?
And its pilots where only turbo prop rated when they got out. Now they will have 1000s of hours of 2 engine jet time.

Loiter time was my first thought.

and MT, they use the S-3 Viking for Carrier Ops (in addition to any number of Helos).

If anything the loiter time will be increased, think of all the fuel ord. and electronic detectors you can load when you don't have all those way over the 170lb FAA standard people on board.

The Orion was neat because they could shut down 2 of the engines to conserve fuel for extended loiter periods. I had the chance to see one flying at an airshow and it was definitely cool.

I remember an awesome high speed pass and then a very steep climb and turn...was trult amazing. However, it is likely getting a bit long in the tooth so to speak.

It might be interesting as to the the capability of a B737 type aircraft with the high bypass turbo fans.

I wonder if it will be able to open a bay and drop torps?
