You can shoot their entire tail off and they will fly on. I even shot off both wing tips and the entire tail, and the guy still had control of his plane.

I dont think Lancs are that hard to kill. I shoten down the whole formation in a Spit9 and still had plenty ammo.

I saw a B-17 flying yesterday that was missing both wings at the outer engines.  Very strange.

Okay, my conjecture of what's going on is if the guy is in gunner position and his plane gets damaged auto-pilot maintains a firm grip until he returns to pilot position.
