I'm having a hard time estimating the proper distance at which to open up on an enemy.  Is there a ref some where that has the info?  I'm not really interested in the actual historical ranges of the guns (both mgs and cannons) but rather the ranges for the guns in this game (as it is currently).  Any help is appreciated.  Oh, and yes I know convergence is a factor.  --Check

Its not a factor. Its your answer. The ammmo leaves your wing just so far apart. Cross,s in an x and spreads. So at convergence of 300 when ammo reaches 600 it is back to width that it was when it left. I think they also programed bullit drop, and dispersion. so if you are pulling hard none 0f this matters  . Besty thing is to go off line and watch the tracers while your moveing around.

Check,
Another thing is get close, like 200m or less.  Why?  Because it makes your targets much bigger    That way they're easy to hit.

Planes that have their armament in the nose (La-5FN, Bf 109) can set convergence further, since the gap between guns is seldom more than three feet.  This also allows them to worry less about convergence too, because mg/cannon spread is relatively negligible.

Thanks for the info guys, but I still don't know how far the guns shoot.  I don't think I explained my question well enough, so here goes again.  Lets say I have P-51 and I'm closing on an enemy plane's 6.  I know I should get as close as possible but...I'm at 800m (just for example) behind him, can my 50's hit him, or am I just wasting ammo?  See where I am going here?  I'd like to know this for each plane because there is always the time when your best (or only) shot may be at some long distance and you will need to know if you should even try to squeeze off a few.

You can hit him at that distance - and in fact much longer as the sim is set up now. I've tried to get a guy's attention when on a countryman and have been able to get sparks at over 1k. Depending on whether drag is modeled yet or not, they are probably only denting the other guy's plane and making loud drumming sounds. If no drag then they are punching holes just as if I was right on him.

But the answer is really a gray one. If you are at convergence range, you are going to shred whatever you hit as the multiple hits in one location will take out whatever you are hitting. If too close or especially too far away you won't be putting near as many bullets into near as small of an area. My guess is that it is a fairly linear function of distance but when farther away fewer bullets are even hitting (target is smaller).

But you can hit at longe range - I've done it. They have yet to die because of it, though.

My own experience flying the 51 seems to indicate that any range over 500 is pretty much wortlhess..Ive sprayed planes at that range with enough lead to sink a battleship but seemingly no damage results at that range. Get em in close, 200 or so and its another story. 50 cals in this game lose their punch after 200 or 300 for some reason.
Flying the ol 51 has been quite a challenge after the .34 update to say the least.
Kills are much MUCH harder to achieve using 50 cals. Guess Ill have to wait for somethin with more punch..the 51 just cant cut it anymore.   Time to fly a dweeb-spit I guess.

FYI Garner has shot me down at 1000+ yards.  I pinged him a few times and thort he was a goner only to find him at d1.1k behind me pinging me to death.

I've never been able to do that myself though! Damn I find it hard enuff to hit targets at 200yrds.
