AHII, older computer and furballs
« on: June 18, 2004, 07:53:46 AM »
So I ran AHII online last night.  In the TA I was able to follow planes with a good framerate; the game looked great.
In the MA it also worked very well until things got busy, then stutters and freezeframes.  When I fired my guns it was a frame killer; three to five seconds of screen lock up, when the frames started up again I was alone.  I was able to shoot at a flight of isolated B-17s with lags/freezes of only about one second.  I tried the ships guns.  A flight of low lancs went from 2.0 and closing to 1.5 past me and going away in one frame.

I didn’t shut down my Internet shield/firewall/whatever (avast!)
Should shutting it down help things much?
What else can I do?

What video card? That's going to be your main focus on hardware (your system's plenty good from what I saw).

DX 9.0b right?

Eskimo your computer is reasonable... the one I'm playing on isn't that much better. You need more RAM and a good video card.

Get 2 pieces of 256MB RAM probably PC2100 aka DDR266 from what I saw of your computer.

Video card w at least 128 MB RAM I'd suggest something with the FX5700 chipset just to keep the price to a dull roar.

Total cost should be less than $250. If you have a problem finding this stuff for that price let me know by emailing the account shown in my profile.

My vidio card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200
I think it has 128 MB of memory...

also, the "Available Physical Memory" jumped up quite a bit... not sure why or how much it matters.
Total Physical Memory   511.51 MB
Available Physical Memory   236.54 MB

What's a good but reasonably priced vidio card that would work well with my system?
Do you think it would make a big difference?

Thanks,

eskimo

eskimo, The next generation of cards are about to hit the market. the current bad bellybutton cards are going to drop in price a whole lot. Wait just a little bit and you can pick up a $500 card for closer to $250 or less. Im considering doing that.

My system is a AMD XP 2100 (1.73 G i think?)
                        512 pc 2100 RAM
                        GF 4 Ti 4600 128 mb

It seems to run AH2 just fine. ive noticed a stutter only about 3 times now (knock on wood). Im not too impressed with some of what Im getting graphics wise right now. It just doesnt seem as sharp as AH1 to me. Stuff on he ground doesnt look very good at all until im getting pretty low. Is everyone getting that? Should I just hold off for some updates from HTC before buying a new card? My whole system was bought 2 years to run AH as best as possible, and now I dont know if my system will get the most out of it.

Graphic Detail
"Level of detail" and "Displayed Object Size"  sliders are set to performance

for a2a slide "Ground detail range" all the way to the right (0.5 miles) - this can cause studders bad if set to high as it is constantly trying to draw all the ground terrain which you don't need air to air

"Textures to load per frame" slider to 1

Video Settings:
unlimited FPS
1024x768
Max Texture Size = 512
Terrain Mipmapping, Transitions, Horizons - all checked
Gamma = 1.0

game is pretty smooth and the planes look good on zoom

How soon do you think it will be until they are out? (Next gen V cards)

Thanks guys,

My RAM is 1 stick of 512 Crucial DDR.  Do I need another?

Eskimo,
This thread might help a little.... I don't know if you tweeked your vid card yet... but after I did this I get frame rates from 130 to 300+

http://www.flyaceshigh.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120169

You want your directx for optimal performance, even if you can't get the AA and AF set to other than default... If you have a firewall or virus scan running in background that will cut your fr considerably.  It might help a little but I don't know to much about nivida cards...

as cheap as ram is it is the least expensive upgrade you can get

XP should have a gig if you play games in it

my specs
ati9800 <- set to 4x AA in ati setup
WinXP
AMD 2600
Gig ram

my board is an older 266 fsb but pushes AH2 and IL/FB AEP well enough

Dude, you wanna sell that video card?  I will give you 50 dollars for it.  My system does great with a gf3 ti200, and I would love to get my fingers on a gf4ti.

If you dont want to sell me the card, all you need is ram.  Everything else about your system is good, if not great.  Video card included.
