The AGP will make little or no difference. Both those cards are about equal in performance terms.. Go for the cheapest of the two.  Be careful though,  cards a lot faster are only a litle more expensive at the moment. A 128 Mb Radeon 9800 Pro can be had for £120 here in UK at present.

9600XT will have a slight edge over the 5700u.

Turn on AA and AF and watch the Nvidia card come to a crawl.

Don't bother with AA, AF. You turn it off for Halo, on for AH, off for Far Cry ya-da-yada. Best leave it off. They are both overrrated anyhow.

1. Processor Speed
2. Amount of memory

I have Athlon 1.4GHz and 512Mb system. I had originally GF2 but last week i updated it to 9600XT 128Mb. At first there was a slight increase of frame rates with the Catalyst drivers that came with the card. After I updated to the latest drivers (4.6) the frame rates dropped, now they are about the same as with GF2. At lowest (e.g. 10-20 planes nearby) about 15fps, so its almost inplayable.

The new card improves frame rates and graphics quality very much in all other games I have, but not in AH2. I have not tried all graphic 'tweaks' of AH2, but don't expect too much from AH2 if you buy 9600XT.

yes the p4 1.5 is weak link, need to get around 2.5 or 3ghz.

Mem  u really need 512,  DDR if ur board can use it.

With the processor you have the 5700 will smoke the 9600 but you will need at least a 400W power supply to run the 5700 whereas the 9600 will run ok at 350W.

$100 says you didnt COMPLETELY remove some of the old stuff left over from your Nvidia card (drivers, dll files etc etc ).  It is very well known that going from Nvidia to ATI will severly degrade the performance of your new ATI card.  My suggestion................... ......reformat, clean OS install

I take it you either have a crappy monitor or crappy eyesight ;)

To me, FSAA makes a *HUGE* difference.
With my Radeon 9800 Pro I can leave 4x FSAA and 8x AF on all the time with little performance drop on any game, including Far Cry, UT2004, IL2 AEP, AH 2.

In KOTOR I can even use 6x FSAA and 16x AF below 12x10 res and its perfectly smooth and looks absolutely gorgeous.
