Airfield operations

As a newbie to online flight sims, I am confused about proper airfield ops. Anyone want to take a quick shot at proper airfield etiquette? Which direction are you supposed to land at the fields that only have 1 runway? How to you avoid landing on the planes taking off?

Hi Pax
Welcome to Online Sims via AH.  On landing and take off there is no set way currently.  FRIENDLY collisions are off so as to not cause the very same problems of which you speak.  Someday HT and co may be able to turn that on when they have a communications program and interface. But for now jump in fire up and go, when you come back.  Find the  nearest runway and set down. Later when wind  comes in to effect you may want to chose the right one, but not needed.

have fun

Hi Paxil, just to add, I recall some sims such as "A10 Cuba" which have numbers painted on the runway thresholds indicative of the best approach. Although some pilots will do anything, I think most fields have preferred landing and takeoff headings. While some sims are great fun just getting organized from the runway, others simplify. Online sims which include variable weather conditions, such as rain, fog or high winds, could find it difficult although not improbable to find someone able to run the tower.

There are a few hundred "virtual controllers" on the web already. They run the Centers, approaches, departures and towers on Satnet (sort of a massive multiplayer FS95/98 server network.) Since we would be playing flat rate I'm sure there are some folks who might do tower time...myself included. Can't say I see it being a real high priority though.

The numbers painted on the ends of runways are the heading numbers your compass should read when landing.  So when the controller tells you to land on runway 9 (FYI, the zero is inferred so this number 9 actually means 90) you fly out west of the airport and land.  If you're told to land on runway 27...thats the exact same runway, but just approach it from the east.

If two runways are side by side, then your told to land on runway 9-left or 9--right.  Runway 27-right is the exact same strip of concrete as 9-left, just facing it from the other end.

HOWEVER.......in Aces High.....just exit your plane on the grey strip of land, but landing on it or taxing up onto it is your choice.  The green grass works just as well as a landing strip.

I imagine I'd be willing to take a shift in the tower now and then when this game goes operational....

Here is THE basics: don't fire guns, rockets or pickle eggs.....

Till you've taken off and are away from the
airfield
