Author Topic: Thinning out startup menu (Read 356 times)

On Windows XP> I have a few programs running in the background I am sure I don't need ..... problem is , I dont know where to go to shut them down. Cntrl-Alt-Del shows what is runing , deleting them from the start up folder does not work, the next reboot and they are right back there. How do I get these programs out of the startup ?

start / run "msconfig" will give you the startup options.

most can be turned off (though it may effect how some things run like a keyboard with extra "hot" keys)

see skuzzy's post on what services can be sut off safely

also right click "my computer" and select "manage"

expand services, and there are some that can be shut down (and set to "disabled" so they dont run automatically) again see skuzzy's sticky post about these.

Heres a good page with settings for Windows XP Home and Professional Service Configurations. Follow the settings for gamers to turn off uneeded settings.

be careful with these settings on that site.

a squadmate of mine used those settings, but then could not get windows updates. there were some needed services that were turned off that blackviper said were ok to shut down.

not saying their advise is bad, just it is more meant for somone who knows exatcly what those services are, how to turn them back on when needed, and when they are actually needed. more of a list for more advanced users to use as a reference.

if you are not totally sure what most of the services do, and what they effect, i'd stick with skuzzy's list.

Related question, once something gets up on startup in msconfig, is there any way to remove the item, other than deselecting in on startup tab. Remove something from the list all together.

If you don't know what you're doing, then switching off native windows components is dangerous. For the other programs I've recommended in the past to use a free ware utility called "end it all". I have windows XP home edition and it works great.

I press a single button before I launch AH and it closes all the necessary programs. I use the "close all" option (I have deselected the video software). This comment will become clear if you decide to use this utility.

by editing the registry.. im thinking there is another way, but im having a brain fart about it right now.

yes true, but most of the stuff in the startup tab of system configuration is installed software (at least in WinXP... in Win98 there are system services in there) the actual OS services (what i mentioned above that blackviper says to do) are not easily accessible from somone who does not know where to look (again in WinXP)

also as i stated that list is not meant for someone who knows little about what they are doing.

you have to edit the registry to get them out of the start up menu of the msconfig

That is true you need to read what each setting and know what they do when set to manual or automatic. His pages do a good once over on all the settings.

btw editing the registry can get real dangerous also, "they" say always back up the registry before you do this.

Just downloaded nice little shareware utility called SpeedUpMyPc that let me take a few extra progs out of my automatic Startup load. You might try that. Allows you to optimize a few other things as well.
