"The Best" is a relative term. Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, Elija Craig are all very good mass produced bourbons. When you start talking about Small Batch Bourbons then Knob Creek, Booker's, Jefferson's Reserve, and Blanton's are top notch.

The best American Vodka in my opinion is Tito's Handmade Vodka. It's made in Texas and is awesome. Skyy and Rain are very good as well.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I think the US should teach Russia how to make good vodka. Then Russia could export some and get out of debt.

Best vodka made in the USA is Tito's handmade vodka.

The 2 best vodka's out there period is  "Thor's Hammer" and
"Christiania"  IMHO of course.  Thor's Hammer is SO smoothe it is almost like drinking water. Which is why I mostly drink Christiania.  I like to TASTE the spirit sometimes.  I love it when people want the most expensive, best tasting vodka around then mix it with OJ or cranberry juice.

Stay away from Hamptons vodka. It is in a blue-green jug of a bottle.  I think it is corn based and made out of minnesota.  It is nasty.  People were sending it back even when it had mixers in it.

Best American whiskey's?
rpm 371 said it best,
Knob Creek, Bookers, Bakers, and Basil Haydens.  They are all small batch bourbons made by Jim Beam.
If you are feeling brave try a shot of bookers neat.  It usualy comes in around 126 proof and is unfiltered.  Don't get me wrong, a great bourbon, it just has a lot of heat at 126 proof.

Basil Haydens manhatten is my drink of choice these days.
mmmmmmmmmmmm

A friend gave me a bottle of Basil Hayden's this past weekend. I haven't had an occasion to open it up and just have a bit but the minute I do will be the first small batch bourbon I will have ever had. I hear that it is exceptional in its taste and flavor.

As for Scotch I really like 12 year old Macallan along with Craganmore and one that is new to me called Glenkinchie Lowland.

I don't drink a lot of Vodka, but I found Crater Lake Vodka to be rather tasty.

For Bourbon I'm a huge fan of Elija Craig Single Barrell 18 Year Old

Damn, now I'm in the mood for some booze.

Needs to be triple distilled! Skyy is pretty good...

The more I drink Absolute the worse my headache gets the next day... Skyy doesn't make me need tylenol...

Absolute is simply a very pure wine spirit mixed with distilled water.

If you want real vodka - try looking for this brands from Ukraine:

http://www.sv.ua/eng/

http://www.nemiroff.ua/main/english

This one is the best stuff I ever tasted:

Russian brands I prefer are not exported... :( Plain Rhy (Rzhanaya) or Wheat (Pshenichnaya) vodka from Kaluga is great, but it's too cheap to export.

Who's gonna teach the US?

Stoli always has been and always will be my favorite. Nice and cold in a tall, narrow shot glass with black bread, cucumber slices or a wedge of citrus fruit as a chaser.

The general rule for Vodka that you intend to drink straight should be: if it isn't produced in Eastern Europe or Scandinavia, it should at the very least come in a simply-shaped bottle deviod of internal illustrations or frosted glass.

Well in that case I guess I will retract my suggestions for Scotch. even though you will be missing out on some of the best Scotch ever made which is very much like the Basil Hayden's.
