SO, has anyone figured out how to change paint schemes in the game yet?  This is something i really want to look into since i have a nice site for SDOE for schemes. I wouldn't mind opening the site up to other sims. AH being the main sim i want to open the site too.

So someone figure it out!

uhhhh....

I don't think it is a question so much of how to do it as it is what happens if you do!

Changing your art could be viewed as the server as hacking (I don't know, Hitech might weigh in here). What's more, we could have people making their cockpits disappear. Not good!

No, this is an area that remains totally up to HTC to enable or not.

Hey Dol, i was thinking.  I don't think there would be a problem.  The game already has custom gun sights.  Thats all client side anyway.  why not have the schemes client side also.  they wont cause any problems..

Actually I don't believe it is a joke.  I asked HT back around .36 or .38 or so about custom nose art.  I think it would be awesome to be able to throw on a historic or your favorite nose art.  Squads could have logos on the bombers.  His reply then was it was being considered to allow custom nose art. Believe it may have been for squads to register and have logos show up for nose art but it would be awesome!

Seems to me that everyone would have to have the same file or else you would be flying around with a paint scheme or nose art that existed only on your front end (of course you would see all other planes that way I suppose)

Ive always likes the idea of pyro, hitech and crew being in bright pink paint schemes...

A user-customised area on the plane was mentioned in the arena as a possible upcoming feature.

32 x 32 pixels 256 colours.

Yeager,
As a Red Baron 3d pilot you are correct when you say that everyone would have to have the .bmp files.  I have the max available files for RB3D which is and isn't enough.  I took a lot of coordination to keep from having 2 squads flying the same paint # with different colours.  You see whatever you have in your paint for the identifying #.
If HTC limits this to registered squads and includes this in the release it won't be much of a problem.  Also if squads in the community get together and talk and post on the BBS what numbers they need for what planes this would work out nicely.  Non squad flyers could easily customize also.  It just takes a community that doesn't get p.o.'ed over little things.  2 ppl or squads designing on the same # at the same time would require one to back down to a different #.  It is doable but just depends on how easy it is for HTC to implement and in which direction they want to go with it.  I am all for it myself

Custom paint would have the same effect, to a degree, as seeing enemy name tags. The likes of torque, and mitsu, might as well paint a target on there planes.

I would much rather see no kill messages til you get into the tower. Then get ALL of your messages if you wait.

Well i wasn't thinking has for nose art.  i was thinking of a planes dir with BMP in it so we could change the paint schemes. I've always like an Olive drab P51 for some reason.  Or a P51 with more color, maybe even the Paul I paint scheme with the yellow nose and the blue camo over the silver body.

Thats what i had in mind when i asked.

Can't really do that.. I'd put bright pink or something to make them easier to see.  Also, I could then put a different color/shade for variants of a plane so I could easily tell what 109 I was up against for example.

Also, I think you severely under-estimate the amount of work it would take to paint one of these birds.  These things are 3D models with moving parts that textures are applied to.

I think custom nose art would be an excellent compromise, and one we could all enjoy.  It would also be much more realistic.  You wouldn't want to see what the arena would look like if everybody could paint their own plane.  Yeck.

The players often do a better job at plane art than the original artist - look at what's out there for SDOE, for example.

Sure, a few would turn out really high quality work.  But this ain't like painting your NASCAR.

Bottom line is there would be to many "non historic" and just plane obnoxious paint jobs that wouldn't fit the theme of the game.

Nevermind the impossibility of every player downloading everybody else's artwork when they log in.  Nope, the nose-art is the only reasonable solution... and even that is dicey from a bandwidth perspective.  If anybody can do it though, HT can.
