I pepper sprayed a guy one night trying to arrest him.  Long story short I ended up spraying both of us due to the fact I was laying on top of him.  I was a good thing it shut him down or I would have been in some real trouble  :)

I've been CS'ed and pepper sprayed, pepper spry is a million times worse.

Hope all goes well for you Tarmac

don't get it. Why do they think you need to experience it? So you know what it's like?

Pure handsomehunk on my part. We had a choice of a direct or indirect hit. I was really leaning towards the indirect when my "buddy" pointed some girls were taking the direct hit. So I stood there while Sgt. Shortmansyndrome blasted me from 3 feet away with a riot can that looked like a damn fire extinguisher. So then I choked, gagged, screamed, and cried for 45 minutes. I was happy not to **** myself.

Thanks for the advice and kind words, all.

I took a shower this morning, being very careful to keep water from running down my face.  Head tilted back the whole time.  No pain, except from the cold water (hot opens the pores and can re-trigger the stuff).  I wasn't wearing my contacts at the time of the spraying, and put them in the next day around noon with no discomfort.  All is well now, although I've had intermittent headaches for the last day.

The reason behind the spraying, we were told, is so that we aren't as surprised the first time we're sprayed with it on duty and know we can fight on.  As an added bonus, if you're ever asked in court if you've ever experienced it, you can say that you know exactly what you were doing to the poor sap on the other end of that stream.

The academy only planned to only swab us under the eyes with the stuff, but being the foolhardy toughguys and gals that we are, we asked to take a spray instead.  Might as well feel it full force, right?  How bad could it possibly be? ;) Interestingly, we're the first class in the 6-year history of the academy that's ever asked to be sprayed.

The taser is coming sometime next month.  :)

Experienced CS gas numerous times (retired Airforce).

It's pretty bad. Furious is right about the snot LOL.

Never had experience with Pepper spray, but I hear it's worse than CS.

I think I can carry on with my little life without finding out personally.

cheers,

There's a couple reasons you get sprayed with it in training. Not only so you can safely say "Yes, I've been hit with that stuff before" but also so you know what it's like. Count how many times you've seen both the perp and the guy/gal in blue get hit with it on Cops. I remember seeing one where they nailed a guy in a stairwell with OC from three different officers. Everybody got hit to some extent. All the officers had watering eyes, the camera guy couldn't hold the camera steady, and the perp was a bawling mess. It's pretty evil stuff.

Tarmac: wait until you have the Taser experiment conducted on your fuzzy butt. That'll leave an impression! One county sheriff got hit during training and wound up with a rather nice scar as a momento. Plenty of people heard about it and he's now known around town as "Sparky the Wunder Cop."
