A little input for the masses please
« on: June 25, 2004, 07:03:23 AM »
For a a sizeable portion of players we are experiencing some very unplayable results from AH2.
We have been tweaking and tweaking and tweaking on our end trying to achieve best results to no avail.
I`m not talking about players with minimum or below minimum stated requirements. I`m talking about a good percentage of us who have well above minimum.
The stutter freeze problem seemed to have gotten better , with many hours of tweaking and seeking tips, untill last patch and now it`s worse than ever.
Some of us running very high end Vid cards are having to run full, maxed out performance settings and are still not getting satisfactory results. On the other hand this hampers the new graphics, in other words are useless to us. It seems totaly contradictory to what AHII is supposed to be about.
For us with the above situation learning the new gunnery is impossible due to the fact you can`t get a very good gun solution on a plane if your experiencing freezes, etc. The plane is just here now and gone when freeze is over.
Having these probs would seem to leave you with the only option of attack/bombing. Not so if your settings are tweaked trying to achieve playability because you just plain can`t see the target till too late.
In off peak times there has been a very, very big drop of players. We are watching a lot of folks get disgusted and cancelling accounts and a lot are just not playing due to frustration. This is very obvious.
I think this needs to be addressed in the form of some input from HTC please. In other words sort of let us in on what is being done and what can be expected as far as fixes, time frame etc.
This is not meant as a whine or a protest. It`s just a simple stating of obvious facts and a request for some input from staff.
For those of us experiencing these probs that haven`t left yet, I think we can weather a pretty good storm, but it`s looksllike right now we are in an F5 with a hurricane off the coast.

I'm getting pretty good results so far. No stutters etc. and good framerates etc. after the textures load. I was at a big battle last night with fires and numerous cons and didn't see it slip below 25 in the heat of the battle over the airfield itself. Usually, though, it was in the mid 30s average in this situation.

At smaller battles away from that field it was at least twice as high.

I have max distance set and in-game quality at 3/4 and card settings pretty high but low/no AA AS. 1024 x 768

There are no tweaks as such, but the system is clean and free of spyware etc., AV software turned off and minimal background process.

Wouldn't mind a few more FPS though for high activity areas and to boost resolution and quality settings some (not that I notice it as being sub standard now). I'm going to tweak it to see what I can get and add a SB audigy 2 which sould geve me a handful of FPS itself in addition to better sound.

System: AMD 2500 OC to 3.2
Video Card: AI Radeon 9500 pro
sound: SB LIve
RAM: 512
OS: win 98

[edit: One thought. Spyware can really trash performance (and in some cases you system itself). I would suggest, as a safeguard, gettting adaware/spybot S&D (free for home use) and use it regularly with a pop up blocker or Mozilla Firebird as a browser.

But start with a full format first to make sure the system is really clean. Not just for spyware, but all sorts of stuff can get out of kilter over time.  My .2 cents on initial troubleshooting.]

How much do you need to see as your ride creates a new subway entrance?

One tip that has helped me and others is to make sure that your system is set up for the maximum refresh rate for your monitor.  My was set at 60, but when I set it to the max of 180, I definately picked up a big jump in FR.  I think I got my best performance out of Beta 38, but it has been downhill since then with each new release sucking up more and more FR, so that I am back down to an average FR between 30 and 50 most of the time

However, I agree that the new patch has increased stutter, as I have had it happen a couple of times last nite and I had not seen it for some time before that.

System:
P4 2.4GB
1BG RAM
Radeon 9800 256MB card

AH graphic settings are all at default, using the 1024x1200 resolution.

Have done 2 patches and lots of betas all trying to addressing video card issue, The reality is, some people are not having problems at all, some are.

Stablity is always our first priority, Just from your post I assume you have only been playing since v1.11 patch 5, notice the patch 5.

Im sure your system can support AHII smothly. It sounds like you do have a  system configureation problem. Right now the best thing I can sugest, is CALL SKUZZY, he can help you step by step checking lots of things on your system.

Welp, can only say that I changed no settings and made on system adjustments for AH2. Thus far, frame rates are the same and I have experienced no problems (crossing my fingers and knocking on virtual wood :D).

Could Skuzzy post these steps as a "sticky" ?

My framerates are great, but when I roll, everthing is blurred. I hesitate to call it studder cause its smooth, but the video just appears to be blurred/smudged. Any thoughts / ideas ?

Can`t remember what ver of beta I first played. I got lost in the  update deal a couple of times and had to redownload and reinstall completely a couple of times.
Yea, it`s a definite head scratcher allright. What`s curious to me is that I don`t have an FR prob like some of the guys are having. I get around 85 FRs. I`ll give Skuzz a call a.s.a.p.
  Thanks for the input HT.

Well, after a week of tweeking the system I had to go get a new video card.  I can now run at at 40fps and when in a big furball at 12fps or better.  However, I do experience the little lockups here and there when I get too close to a con or I do something dum like fire the guns or so.  Very hard to aim when that happens.  I guess the only issue now is that if I don't use the max performance settings I get down to 20fps just sitting in the tower, with more and longer lock ups.  The card I got was $150, 256RAM bla bla bla.  It would be nice, if I could actualy see the graphics AHII was supposed to deliver.  $150 latter, I still cannot see them and whatever I can see looks like a cartoon.  I keep looking for bugs bunny to jump out of the trees.  What up with the colors? (Still like AHI Look better).

I guess I should be happy that now I can play the game.  So, if you need help running AHII, follow these steps.

1) Spend a long amount of time tuning
2) Spend a lot of money on new hardware
3) Disable what the new hardware can offer so that you cannot see the new graphics and/or any GVs or buildings
4) pay your $15 and be greatfull for the improvements.
5) Rember it is your fault for not spending enough time in the beta versions.  Had you been playing beta, your system would not need any tuning or upgrades.  Same on you.  (get him guys)

Nwbie, it`s the trip down from 10,000 ft, in a death spiral, one wing missing and getting to 300 ft , then FREEZE that gets to me. Hell, time the freeze is over your back in the tower and have missed the good parts. :D
