When a carrier is destroyed the overhead ship diagrams including the gun positions disappear. They can still be used but it's guesswork to find them, much less find one that's working i.e. not destroyed or already manned. Sea is all that can be seen.
This does not happen when the Cruiser is destroyed where all overhead ship diagrams are still present.
