We get Digital TV through Satellite in the UK.  Normal terrestrial channels are broadcast as digital and analogue (apart from ITV, just analogue) but all will be digital within the next 2 or 3 years.

Where I live, they're years ahead of the U.S. in terrestrial, digital, HDTV, 'Hi-Vision', W-CDMA, plasma displays and other technologies. Ten years ago, terrestrial TV broadcasts were of higher quality than any current cable system in the U.S. but that's due to continuous infrastucture and broadcast equipment investment.

There's even a hydrogen fuel cell "filling station" for cars opening in a few weeks about 1 mile from my house.

Digital TV here. There's not so much need for HDTV in Europe, as our TV standards are superior to NTSC, but it would be nice to have.

The main differences are that NTSC has more frames/sec, 29,97 fps than PAL 25 fps but then NTSC has some less horizontal lines than PAL.

Even with all the reforms of late Japan is the #1 king of wasteful and corrupt government pork spending, but it sure does provide for some nice toys and very very good roads..   Tanaka Kakuei would still be proud. :)

"Never Twice the Same Colour" Has
less lines and worse colours. But PAL does indeed flicker more, but this can be eliminated by getting a 100 Hz set. Both of them would be much better if they wouldn't have been made compatible with monochrome sets.

I'm not Japanese, Nilsen. I've just lived here for many years. Maybe too many?

To say that HDTV is not needed because PAL is better than HTSC may be a little short-sighted, mora. HDTV is an enormous leap in picture quality. True HDTV is stunning. It's like saying you don't need Pentium IV because your Pentium III's are better than Pentium II's. Have you have ever seen true HDTV?

That's not what I meant. I just guessed that would be one reason why Europe is lagging in HDTV technology, as we have widescreen and digital transmissions but no HDTV.

Or like saying you don't need Windows XP because Windows 98 is better than Windows 95? ;)
