CVs- We need warning of course changes on deck
« on: June 30, 2004, 12:04:45 PM »
On occasions too numerable to recall I have found myself ground looping on the deck, or tossed off the side or into the island of a CV which has started a hard turn during my launch.  In RL takeoffs are controlled by the launch crew. Couldn't we have some kind of klaxon or flag to warn pilots on deck that the ship was about to begin a manoeuver?  It's so embarassing to crash on takeoff, not to mention, bad for your health.

That really loud ship horn could be a warning of turn about to occur. Navy guys know what that sound is called?

It shouldnt delay the turn tho, if the boat is about to turn it is prob because there are eggs on there way down and it needs to turn ASAP.

I dont have problems with a turning cv. On take off I just us my rudder to make up for the turn. Ive only lost 2 planes this way, Both of them I was loaded down with plenty to ord ro kill those pesky SBs.

OK Bluej1 - guess I just need to work on my CV takeoff skills. Thanks for responding.

Kevykey - that loud sounding horn is called a 'klaxon' after the name of the original manufacurer. By the same means, a loudspeaker at an RAF airfield was referred to as the 'Tannoy'.

I'd still like to see a warning light, or flag or hear a klaxon just before a CV started a turn.

fluffy, go offline and go to a friendly cv. Move the cv an d practice taking off while its turning with a seafire. This is what I did until I worked my way up to the heavier planes.

BlueJ1....I also find it very easy to take off of a turning carrier carrier...however I didnt use to. It was only after I got CHPRO rudder pedals that I was able to succesfully takeoff from a turning carrier. And even now with a heavily laiden aircraft it can be very difficult, if not impossible. Not everyone has a stick with the ability to manipulate there rudders and differental braking to get the plane straight on a turning deck. If there was a warning...ie the "Klaxon"(thanks Fluffy).. then it would be easier to abort takeoff until the ship has stabalized. It stinks to be launching a Chog and crash because the CV decided to turn midway through the rollout.

Watch the ships wake...........

Its a good point tho  .........may be a little bit of inter  player communication and the odd glance at the ships way points would help.

If bad guys are attacking the CV and there is a human controlling that CV and turning to make it harder for the bombers you are going to get tired of that klaxon going off constantly.

It wouldnt be any worse than the air raid horn at a land base. You would have the ability to turn it up or down in your sound settings. Shouldnt be that big of a deal. Just would be nice to have a 3-5 second warning prior to ship turn.

How about when coming in to land! That's when a warning is really needed. I hate being on final approach hanging on a stall full flaps and gear down... then 2 seconds before touchdown that CV is turing hard left.... LOOKOUT for that Island Bridge!

maybe a set of lights that are always on. Red for turning yellow for about to turn and green for not turning.

How about looking at your map to see if the CV is near a turn-point in it's charted course?   :aok

2 seconds before touchdown, and the boat begins a turn, should be a piece of cake.

Any turn that the CV is executing, outside of a corkscrew turn, u should have no problem landing on it. If you do, then you just simply need more practice.
