Vid card help please
« on: July 01, 2004, 01:12:53 PM »
I am not very computer literate and need some assistance. My machine has a pentium 4 w/ 1.6 Gig and 512 meg ram. My vid card currently is a geforce ti200 which I believe is a 64meg???. I get frame rates in 50s and 60s alone in the blue, and into low 20s with stutters, freezes, and micro warps when in a crowded situation.

I would like to get a new vidcard, but I dont want to buy one that will just bottleneck on my system. Meaning I dont know if a 256 vid card will outperform a 128 vid card on my machine? Would rather save the extra money for porn if possible.

Furthermore, are there any pitfalls form switching to ATI form Nvidia? vis a vis uninstall, drivers, etc.

Please give me your input with the caveat that I dont know much about these machines, I need a K.I.S.S method.

from what I've gotten reading this board, it looks like you have plenty of ram, but your processor is bit on the slow side.  So you dont want to buy more vid card than can keep up with your processor.  I leave it to others running similar cpu/ram configs to say how well they do frame rate wise with which particular cards.  I've read that the Ti's, tho showing their age some, are still holding up pretty well with modern (read this year's :)) games.

I believe stutters and warps are more server and network related than related to what speed/size system you run.  Again,  those running the highest-end systems can better say about this.

I've read in other threads in this forum that there may be issues when switching between Nvidia and ATI cards, if portions of the old cards drivers are not cleaned thoroughly by use of a driver cleaner utility.  A search will find those threads.
