AGP Aperature Size and Stutters
« on: July 05, 2004, 10:26:09 PM »
Gents,

I was doing fine with Patch 4 and the ahtest did nothing.  Not an improvement nor was it a problem.

Patch 5 has been brutal.  Bad, almost unplayable stutters.  It sudddenly dawned on me that I had changed my AGP Aperature size from 128 to 64 some month or so ago as an experiment in another game.

I have 512 M of RAMBUS or RDRAM.  Although it is often recommended to run 1/2 system RAM as an aperature setting, I have found that 128 works best for me.  Regardless, after setting the AGP aperature back to 128 from 64.

The AGP setting is normally found in the BIOS under Advanced Chipset Features.  Stutterers may want to experiment with this.  As always, know what you're doing or DON'T do it.  You Been Warned!!

Well you don't say if it made a difference in AH2 after you changed it back, did it?

Thanks Dipstick....Long day. :(

Yes changing my AGP aperature back to 128 helped immensely.  I still have startup stutters.  I was in that huge Furball, base bashing at 18 tonight, 98% of the stutters were gone.  Very playable

Thanks again Dipstick

What's interesting is his post said 64mb is recommended. 128 works best here. Just think of all those out there who's probably set at 16 or 32 and don't even know it. Perhaps 128 would fix alot of them...

My bios gives me the choice of 64 or 256. That's it. After reading your post I went in and changed from 64 to 256. Back to AHII, same stutters, no apparent change. It seems to make no difference at all to the performance of AHII in any way.

AGP aperture is a weird beast. It is usually trial and error to find a 'sweet spot'.
Do not rely on the same as graphics card, or half your system mem recommendations etc. Try it at different sizes see what works best. Theoretcially the more mem your graphics card has, the less the AGP aperture needs to be, but as I said it's trial and error.
