It depends on your motherboard.

Example:My Asus A7N8X has dual channel DDR400 which increases bandwith(one dimm in bank one,the other in bank two or three).

I'd check your motherboard manufacturers website and see if there is any benefit to having one vs two.

If it's for that Athlon computer you mentioned in your other thread, you might not want to tie your hands getting 2 256 meg sticks.  You'll gain a bit of performance with 2 sticks over 1, but when the time comes to upgrade past 512 meg you'll be pissed off because you'll have to buy 2 whole sticks again.  If you get the single 512 meg stick now, you can add another 512 meg stick later and not only go to a full gig of ram, but also take advantage of the dual channel memory controller.

512 meg memory is ok for TODAY, but unless you're a benchmark freak you may not notice the difference between dual channel and single channel DDR.  If you think you'll ever add more memory past the initial purchase, get a single stick.

IMHO.

Actually, some boards such as mine will run dual channel with all 3 slots populated.  I have 2x256 in slots 1 & 2 and 512 in slot 3. I first found this info in the board's manual and it is also on the Asus FAQs, but I don't remember exactly where.  Dual channel memory is confirmed during my POST at boot.

Davanrino is correct. Most new dual channel Athlon boards have 3 DIMM slots. By using 2x256 now in the correct slots, at a later date he can buy 1x512, rearrange his ram and still get dual channel.

Best brands IMO not in any particular order -
Corsair
Crucial
Mushkin
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Asus M3N-HT mobo
2 x 2Gb Corsair 1066 DDR2 memory

Both of those choices are cas 3.You'll take a performance hit.Cas 2.5 is better, and I use cas 2.0.

The examples of quality memory above are all good, but I like Kingston HyperX myself.
