The 24 thread and the new aircraft wishlist got me thinking about which aircraft make the most sense and would have the most potential use overall in scenarios etc.
So, with my admitedly Allied interest, here's my list and reasons why. Seems like these would fill big gaps in the scenario makers lists.
B24(41-45)(Later nose turret version)-Used in the ETO, MTO, PTO, CBI, Aleutians etc. Used by USAAF, US Navy, RAAF and RAF. It could fill in for the D model on the first Ploesti Raid, and obviously was the variant flying the later Ploesti Raids as well as Berlin, Rabaul, Rangoon etc.
B25(41-45(probably a glass nose J would be the best compromise)-ETO(with the RAF), MTO, PTO, CBI, Aleutians, Russian Front, North Africa
P38H(41-45)-ETO, MTO, North Africa, Aleutians, CBI, PTO. Most of the 38 Aces got the majority of their kills in the early variants. Bong got his first 26 in those if I remember right. The H can stand in for the E,F,G. Get Yamamoto, Hit Rabaul, fight the JG53 109s over North Africa, Sicily and Italy, Freeze on the way to Berlin, Get lost in the soup over the Aleutians.
P39-PTO, North Africa, MTO, Aleutians, Russian Front. In combat from 41-45 in one place or another. Certainly the Russians used it well. Was flying in the Med until August 44 as well.
Beaufighter(40-45)-ETO, North Africa, MTO, PTO, CBI-with the RAF, Coastal Command, USAAF, RAAF. I always imagined a scenario where I was flying one of those on the Norway Raids, attacking ground transport in the North African desert, or Japanese shipping in the Pacific.
I'm sure there are others, but that's my narrowed down, widest use aircraft that are missing from the AH planeset.
