Looking for .50 Gunsight...
« on: January 04, 2001, 07:11:00 AM »
Bad streak, time to get a New Gunsight !

I know you devils make some yourselves, please, be nice and share 'um with the Olde Saw

I used to like Flakbait's B26 gunsight, but had to go down in resolution (Only 1280/1024 now...) and it doesn't fit well no more...

 Ammo's K14 gunsight from the HTC gunsight down load page works very well in hi-res. I particulalry like the white  one.

You might try what most people call the dot of death. It's just a single pixel in the middle fo your sight. I use it myself and am veyr successful with it. And if it's not the sight it must be my super computer of a mind calculating trajectories, vectors of flight, ballistic equations all will in flight and in a split second

Hold on, folks...help is coming!

I'm finishing up an article on gunsights that will include much detail on modifying AH sights.

The article will explain the lead angle problem in terms of how a sight design can help the pilot solve that problem. Suggested changes include how to design a sight that can be used to estimate target range and the lead angle required for various angle off situations.

Here is a typical illustration from the article:

I think gunsights are way over-rated. I use all different kinds in different planes and haven't noticed any real difference in my gunnery.

Lemme expand a little. What I meant to say was, after logging enough time, you tend to figure out how much lead you need in front of your target, based on which plane you're flying, or the armament you're carrying (hispanos, mausers, .50 cals, etc.). I've found that I don't pay too much attention to my gunsight at all (except for level 12 o'clock shots), I can feel when the bullets are going to fall on the badguy and wait to squeeze my trigger til that time.

I only partly agree hblair.  Check my page:
 http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/

You can grab my current sight there SAW.  I have improved my deflection shooting noticeably with this sight by moving the aim point up the glass for more visibility.  You have to adjust your seat upwards to match, but it's no big deal.  That extra visibility is great.

BTW, don't look at my gunnery percentage on the score page... it sucks.    I fly the Jug and the F6F a lot, and those planes have lots of ammo so I don't conserver it.  I tend to lead the bogey by a lot extra and let him fly through the stream to get deflection hits.  It wastes lots of bullets, but it gets the job done.  I'll also pour bullets into a long range enemy in an attempt to damage him.  In the Jug you have enough ammo to get away with that.    (BTW, long range for me is D 600 or so.)

 This a knock off of Doc Dooms WB 190 deflection sight to demonstrate the paint scheme I developed for my color vision problems.

 The marks haven't been fine tuned for Aces High deflection shooting so it needs a bit of work still.

 It shows up well against the water,sky and earth textures due to the 3 color scheme,the red/green color deficient players may want to adapt the color scheme to their preferred gunsight.

Indexed colors:

Off White: Internal lines

R=220
G=237
B=182

Yellow:

R=255
G=255
B=160

Blue: Outlines yellow

R=99
G=173
B=255

I modified the A-26 sight to open it up a little more. Even I found it a tad constraining; not enough visual space in the middle. Anyway, here it is:

thx westy, i like that sight too.

Will agree with Hblair on one thing. Now I don't even use the sight conciously. I just fire on instinct. I do however use those stinking range finding icons It is much tougher without those:

Flying 109's with a single nose cannon teaches you to fire close-in. I almost never try for a shot at over 300 yards. Another thing that helps is to turn your tracers off. This will really help you to trust your instinct instead of those pesky tracers.
