You like that C6 Steve? I'm so undecided about that. Some angles I think it looks ok, but from others... Hate the no pop up lights, and the intereior looks too luxury. Going to be out of my price range anyway. I'm looking for either a 69 big block coupe, or a 1970 LT1 coupe, prefereably the 70. A 2002 ZO6 wouldnt be bad either if I could find a deal, but I love the Shark style

Those C6's are sure going to lay down the rubber though. Cant wait to see the numbers from the preformance model!

I had a 59 vette and liked it. I drove a lot of 63-67 vettes.

They make a complete c5 conversion for early (56-60) vettes.

you can build a 59 that will do everything better than a new vette if that is what you want. And... you won't have to wander around the parking lot clicking your key fob to tell which one is yours

I like new vettes but they are not really relevant in this discussion.

Yea I've seen the C5 conversion kits on the older styles. I wouldnt do that for 2 reasons though. If I wanted a 59 to do what a C5 can, the $$$ would be crazy, in the conversion I read about it was anyway. The second is, I love older cars in their original shape. I could never tear apart a 59 that much. Only changes I would ever make are ones that could be reversed. Just my preference. You are right about the older car styles though, the new ones dont even compare. 63-67 are great but the $$$, wow! Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky.

I should have about 425 at the flywheel, and I made MANY compromises for driveability. It will have over 350 foot pounds of torque when the converter kicks in at 2800, and yes it has over drive, and the torque curve will stay at or near 400 all the way up to 5,500RPM. Add to that a bulletproof 9" rear with 3.89 gears, and 13" power disc brakes, gas shocks, progressive springs, subframe connectors and a rollbar (it is a convertible)...this thing will out accelerate a Boss429 of the day and out handle out stop a Corvette of the day (thought not Steve's C6 ). It'll idle a little rough (cam profile) but not like the old Cobra Jets, it wont need a tune-up every month or two (full MSD ignition). 12 flat will be the extreme limit without DRs you are right, the trick is in the cal-trac bars though, those babies HOOK:D

Regarding the Kerry comment...just another reason to have/want a hot rod IMHO.

I probably will stick with a small block, either a 302 or a 351W. There are some crate engines in that size that put out close to 500hp and still will get you at least palatable gas mileage. If I dropped a big block into the thing you are right, I would have to cut the shock towers, add heavy duty springs and redo the mounts but I expected that.

Actually, a year before, in 64 they crammed a 427 side oiler in the Fairlane. While cool it was built strictly for drag racing and I plan on driving this car. I saw a top loader for sale on E-bay, am so close to placing a bid. Wife would shoot me though.

slap... it is neat that there are shows like that but what they do is not really what I am into. Mostly they are building show cars. Nothing wrong with that and they are neat cars but I really like what edbert is doing a lot more. I would rather spend an hour in his garage than own the whole series of that show on dvd.

ed.. you can get new fe crate motors now that put out 600 hp and weigh not much more than your motor. when yu get to 13" rotors stopping is all tire and weight distribution anyhow.

I have all bilstein and hotchkiss susspension parts on the elky. I can't run regular even with 9.5 to one. you may be surprised that you won't be able to either. Not if you want a decent ignition curve. My 468 puts out a lot of torque and the Hp is ok with the sorta lumpy howards cam.

Why did you put an auto in the car? left leg broke?

Thats a 351W that replaced a 289. The 351 weighs within 10 pounds of that lil ole 289, due to aluminum heads and intake. I have done a lot to take weight off but ended up adding much of it back. What I DID improve was the distribution, this thing is no where near ideally balanced but most of the weight came off the front and was put into the rear, and the vast majority of the weight I added is blow the center of gravity (which was itself lowered).

The car originally came with an auto, it was much easier to keep it that way. Plus this thing is a cruiser not a sports car. My 97 Cobra (daily driver) has a stick if I ever feel the urge to row:)

I hear ya ... but typically, these cars are their everyday ride so they aren't done for going to shows to win trophies.

I like the fact that they are taking some of the classics and putting them back together, better than when they were new. The job they did on a Chevelle was incredible. Reminded me of my high school days seeing muscle cars such as that one and the El Camino.

Wish I still had my AMX !!!

ed... in my Healey the weight distribution is about 50 50 but with a 90" wheelbase it is kinda moot anyhow. guys running small block fords in em complain the front is too light.

I like the things you have done but really do think the auto spoils it but that is a personal thing.

my elky big block needs alluminum heads but is still lighter than the old 396 that was in there originally. headers probly saved 50 lbs alone and the starter maybe 20...

I am not a purist. I like the old bodies and rear wheel drive but will modify anything I think will be better or I can afford..

Oh and the 1972 grand Tomato is out of the paint shop, new chromes, Wx strips and getting the interior redone from scratch

oh, and a corvette engine

Not a muscle car...but not bad at all for a daily driver sedan. It will run the 1/4 in the low to mid 15's. Beats the punks in their ricers and V-6 Mustangs/Camaros, which is good enough for me. Plus nobody looks twice at it which is a good thing where I live (flashy cars tend to get trashed quickly)

For some reason it annoys the crap out of those kids when their trendy rice rocket is beaten by a brown land yacht. They frequently signal that "I'm number one"
