To obtain a solid patent, be prepared to pay a minimum of 10k...in addition, and perhaps more importantly, be prepared to defend it. Patent defense is most common and can run into the tens of thousands.
Unless your idea is very unique, I would advise foregoing the patent process and manufacturing and selling as much as possible, as quickly as possible.
There are many companies which specialize in "knocking off" other peoples ideas. They will have no fear of litagation by you unless you have a large pool of money for patent defense.
