Request: Could Buff burn rate be changed?
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:04:49 PM »
With larger towns, 15 min FH down time, and different base layouts, strategic targets are arguably more important than ever in AH2. Wiping out resupply from the zone city can slow an advancing horde, or give your own team more time to finish a base capture.

Current burn rate settings limit Buffs' ability to cover the map strategically. Some bomber squads are willing to take an hour to travel the 7-8 boxes these runs can require, but report that they uniformly have to ditch due to the fuel burn on the return flight.
Current maps are smaller, too, so the problem will only be worse when the bigger maps begin to show up.

This seems a poor reward for players willing to sacrifice the time for important team goals.

I'd argue that even in MA, Buffs should be able to reach most any point in the map and return. Could the Buff burn rate be reduced to 1.75 or 1.5 to allow these long range runs to end in landings, and further encourage their use? I cant imagine that these change would impact play balance in any other way, as the subset willing to push ranges tp the wall will remain small.

They have to ditch because they take 25% fuel load, climb to 30k and run max throttle all the time.

Take 100% fuel load and try using Normal/Cruise settings with buffs - it goes anywhere, to and fro.

Use the engine management system to conserve fuel by reducing boost and reducing RPMs.

It is really that simple.

For once, I agree with you Kweassa. Even at 100% throttle they still have 297 minutes in a B17, thats not enough?!?

Cruise makes sense.  I don't have time/patience for those very long range flights, but I've been thinking about the issue as I watch the impact of town changes, 75% fuel efect on porking :) , etc. I wish I could find where I first read this, but a few weeks ago came across a posting from a guy whose squad runs these VLR missions fairly often. He was frustrated that they almost always have to ditch, "even with 100% fuel" -- but I have no idea if they use appropriate VLR fuel management.

I know the small maps are part of it, but the strat changes seem to have put more emphasis on swarm attacks. It's really hard for 6-8 people to make an impact on their own, and I was wondering if the Buff changes could be part of a rebalancing.....

But, may be moot anyway. Like I said, not many people are going to invest that time in a single mission.

The old burn rate is 1.5.  The new burn rate is 2.0.  This is a one-third increase in burn rate.  The change can more than be made up for with even a small amount of engine managment.

Given the extreme range of bombers in AH1, even cutting a third off of that range seems rather minor to me.

Kweassa is right.

I don't have any problem getting back because of lack of fuel.  I don't get back because of lack of parts.

By the way, to fly at maximum range, you've got to first get up to a high speed at an altitude at which your engine operates efficiently.  Then throttle back to whatever is recommended on the E6B.  If no recommendation, then use about 60% manifold, and cut back rpms 3,000-5,000.  You'll go much further than by flying at a higher power and speed.  Just make sure you get up to cruising speed before you cut back power.
