B-17 drones
« on: July 11, 2004, 01:26:30 AM »
I was climbing after takeoff at 120 mph. Had set the auto speed at 120 using the dot command. My drones never caught up with me and infact I lost the left one which was the furthest back. I went to level and increased speed and the other drone caught up with me. Strange, I go faster and they catch me. They should be programmed to form up after take off no matter what speed I'm going, but especially if I'm going slow.

First, 120 is too slow, try 135 for lancs.

Next, key to drones is to level after takeoff, cut power slightly, hold till they are formed up, then go do whatever you like, they'll be ok.

You were actually flying below the stall edge, I don't think the drones are programed to try to duplicate that.

Too steep of an angle of climb, too slow, to low, are all things drones can't be expected to deal with.

I have had the same problem with B17 drones, they just don't climb with me or keep speed up with me. I have had no problem with any other bombers just the 17's.

I had to launch 3 times to get both B17 drones to join up and finally had to settle for 1 drone.
Same problems:

All 3 attempts, one drone flew directly under me by about 1000 feet, at runway elevation, right thru foot hills & mountains, refused to climb when I levelled off, cut throttle and waited for him.

The other drone formed-up nicely on my right without any coaxing.

Eventually, the low drone exploded, then the good drone quickly switched to my left side.

This has happened several times before.

The B26 drones, by comparison, join-up smartly and stay there.

It is, without any doubt, an AH2 bug in the B17 drone feature.

I have no idea what you're all doing wrong. I've NEVER lost a drone on takeoff in any game.
