Swasti's...
« on: July 11, 2004, 07:49:15 PM »
So... kinda wondering what I should do. Right now I'm working with them IN, but eventually I have to take them OUT... I'm doing a 109E, so I think it will look funny if I just omit it (having a big blank spot where it would have been, surrounded by tiger striping)...

So, what do you all think? Replace with a slightly faded 4-point diamond? Nothing that looks like a swasti, but takes its place?

What's the official word on "filling in"? Does HTC prefer "absence of" or "replacement of" this element of Luftwaffe paint schemes?

you could fill it in with the maltese cross that they usually have on german models and such.  thats all i could think of though the 4 point diamond wouldn't be bad either :aok

There are currently no swasti's in AH2 (and there weren't in AH1 either).

Don't confuse the Finnish markings with the Swasti. They are different, and do not stand for the same thing.

Yes, the blue Finnish Air Force marking we have in AH & AH2 in the 109G2 has nothing to do with the German swastika.

This text from Lentolaivue26.org:
Quote
The Story of the Finnish Blue "Swastika"

The Finnish Air Force is one of the oldest independent air forces in the world, founded on the 6th of March 1918. At that time there was a civil war (aka the Freedom War) ongoing in Finland, the White Army fought against the Red Guards which aimed to creation of a socialist state of Finland - like the revolutional forces in Russia on the same time.

A Swedish count Erich von Rosen wanted to support the White Army and presented the first aeroplane - Thulin (Morane-Saulnier) Parasol - to it. The aircraft was flown from Sweden to Vaasa. Actually the first aircraft arrived to Pietarsaari from Sweden on the 26th of February, but it got engine failure and was delivered later to the White Army. The Chief Commanding Officer of the White Army, General C.G.E Mannerheim, named that Morane-Saulnier Parasol -fighter as the Finnish Air Forces aircraft number One.

Count Erich von Rosen was a notable expeditor who had used a swastika as a personal good luck symbol painted to his aircraft during his journeys in the Orient and he let the same symbol be painted to the given aifcraft. The blue, horizontal swastika became on the 18th of March 1918 the official insignia of the White Army aircrafts and when the Freedom War ended, the official national insignia of the Finnish Air Force. The same insignia was also used later on the Finnish Army armoured vehicles, for some misunderstandings at the beginning, some swastikas were painted mirrored, actually they should be painted clockwise.

The blue swastika was used in the Finnish Air Force until the Second World War ended and as You have now read, it has nothing to do with the Nazi symbol - tip pointed black swastika, which was actually a "party"-logo.

Not to mention, in some countries they are ILLEGAL. Hence for this sim to be played in those countries it cannot have swastikas anywhere.

I would think that something in place of the swastika would look better than nothing at all.  A "placeholder" symbol, like a square tilted 45 degrees?

The placeholder type of things are more of a distraction than anything else.  They call attention to the fact that something is there that youve never seen on a real plane.   I find it ashame that we cant have the realistic skins, but its a no brainer for HT...as a business owner it just makes no sense to have them.

Maybe it's time to ask again.

Better be careful with it.

It turns out that the Neo-Nazis who ran into the same legal problems as us, also experimented with their variants of the swastika. Although I didn't know it at all, my last 'substitute' turned out to be an actual Ukranian Neo-Nazi symbol in use!!

So, I just decided to not use any substitutes at all.

If the original skin had a swastiska, then just leave it off and color the area as the rest of the skin is done.  Do not put something in place of it.
This is for the sake of consistency.
