Interesting b26 sortie
« on: June 29, 2001, 10:06:00 PM »
This sortie has to go down as the strangest I've ever had in a b26.  I upped from 28 to attack the cv just north of it.  Immediately after takeoff I was getting swarmed by fighters and managed to shoot down 6 of them.  All of them except 1 f4u was coming up on my dead 6.  I did manage to kill the f4u, but he took out an engine.  Later two planes attacked at the same time, I killed them both but lost the both elevators.  Now I found myself desending out of control, so I used my rudder to point myself at the cv.  The funny thing was I was headed at the PERFECT angle to crash right into it's deck.  The fleet ack began tearing me apart, but this only lined me up even better.  Right before I hit the water I release all 4 1000lbers, and all 4 of them hit!  :D  I even got a 7th kill of a spit on the deck.

On the next sortie I finished the job and sunk the CV!  :)

Here's the film:  http://www.engr.orst.edu/~bloom/b26.ahf

Darn straight Wolf!  He had one of the best squad COs in the business.

I keep on forgetting his name though!

Plus Bloom picked up pointers on what not to do from me!

Sounds like it was a cool sortie.  Especially the kills on the fighters.  Damn pest anyways!!    :)

Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

Interesting is an understantement to say the least.

A lone bomber flies into a big furball around the enemy cv.

All those fighters flying around, and who comes out with 6 kills?

Nope, not any of the fighters..

yeah, bloom is a danm good bomber pilot. he seldom ever miss'es his target, and knows how to use his guns. way to go bloom. I would like to see the film, but all I get from the post is computer watermelon chat stuff. no film to down load, gee if only there was a way you could somehow send it to a person. that would be so cool. oh well.

nice job any ways bloom.

Try going to www.engr.orst.edu/~bloom/  and then find the b26.ahf file and try clicking it.  That should definately work.  :)

My comment wasn't about the skill of the pilot, but that of the realism of buff gunning in aces high..

It's another thing to make some concessions for buff gameplay than to make it the most dangerous thing on wings in the arena.

But I guess that's just a worn out and old argument so let's leave it at that.

Bombers guns are powerfull but those guys didn't use time to set up a good attack and my guess is most of them were also loaded with bombs/rockets when they took off from CV thus limiting their ability to climb.
There were also few Knight fighters trying to send enemies back to the tower to think what went wrong  ;)

Still doesn't change the fact that the B26 killed as much fighters as the rest of the planes together in that area.

If bombers would have been that powerful in reality, they'd fly missions unescorted and be feared by the defenders. Oh, right.. that's how it is in AH today.

hiya all:

the reason for the deadly guns in AH is do to the fact that:

1. icons let you know distance of enemy aircraft.

2. icons help line up enemy aircraft.

3. you don't see alot of bomber formations, most of the time it is one or two buffs. so they need good guns or very few people would fly the bombers.

4. you don't see to many bombers with any escorts in Ah, so the buffs need better guns to help defend it self.

5. In WWII, most times a bomber was attacked, it was hit by more then one fighter at a time, like maybe a squad of them.

Nomatter how you look at it, bloom did a great job downing 6 aircraft and getting one on the CV deck, as well as putting his four bombs on the intended target. well done bloom.

Well, not as successful as a mission, but still just mind-blowingly cool, I had a B26 sortie once I think is near that.

I'm heading solo to a nearby enemy field, gonna pepper it in preparation for takedown. This is AH 1.04p5. Well, I'm about, oh, 5-7 thousand feet, I get in my bombsite and what do I see?

I heavy buff struggling towards me to take off! I figure, there's no way I can get it, stop it from peppering my base, I have no fighter escort. So I ignore it. I aim and drop my load, then have a wicked inspiration.

I close the bomb doors, roll on my back, and haul stick in an inverted loop. This is a B26, mind you. A B26. I'm going so fast, and pull so many Gs that I almost black out, I tear parts of my wing off (made it hard to aim, but I had a rudder) and am screaming in on this B-17s bellybutton at about 350MPH, with no way in heck of slowing down. I got one chance.

I take a lopsided aim on the port wing, and let rip. I rake my rudder a few times, and spread the shots. He must have seen me because I get sprayed to hell and back inside of about 10 seconds. Then I zoom past him still screaming at supernatural speeds (that was one hell of a dive I pulled) and limp back to base with one engine to land safely. If memory calls, I must have ripped his wing off, but this was nearly a year ago, so I don't remember. I wasn't bombed at base, so he must have been taken out.

That was just an effing amazing run. It was shortly after I started flying AH, also, so I was doubly surprised I had lived through it. Hella-fun, though.

I'm more inclined to think the real reason is nobody knows how to attack a bomber properly.  It just irks me everytime I hear somebody complain about bombers.  I'm always interested in seeing the film of the alleged super bomber that shot you down so I can see for myself.

Hans.

hans:

I agree with the fact that if you take the time to set up on  abombe, you will take it out with little to no damage to yourself.
But the guns are lethal, I know this from the fact that I to have flown the bombers and have picked up a few kills here and there.
I have also been in the fighter going after the bomber, and if I dont take the time to set up, I'm probably going to get shot to hell. I have never complained about the buff guns as I know that a straight up the six attack is the worst thing you can do. you have a better chance of serviving a HO with a F4U.

But now I would like to point out that this post is not about lazersighted lethal buff guns. It is about a good sortie that was wild as to the fact of the number of kills and was still able to hit the target well the plane was heading for the drink.

once again, well done bloom.
